Really, do you have to be 21 to drink in the US?

:-/Yea.. It kinda sucks, but people do it anyway lol.. What age do you have to be in the UK? I heard in Germany, you only have to be tall enough to reach the bar! lol:D

Check out these pictures, here and here!

Wow, that was funny.

You're welcome. And of course you do. You're 18. I'm much older and still have a lot to learn. Intelligence is not how much you know but how well you use what you already know. And this you do quite well.

Actually I'm 17. ;) And you make a really good point.

Yes you do. Any scientific evidence that is at odds with a strict interpretation of the Bible you claim is false. That is a disagreement. If science contradicts the Bible, rather than looking at how to reinterpret the Scriptures to include the new information, you simply dismiss the information as bogus. It's a lot like the Warren Commission.

Yes, I do claim some things are false, but that doesn't mean I don't believe in science at all. My goodness, God was the first scientist!

Please substantiate this. I completely disagree. Most Protestants I know do not take the bible literally. I was Episcopalian and Methodist, and I know they are not literal interpretors. And as proof, I'll simply point out how many Protestant sects there are. They can't ALL be interpreting the Bible literally if they ALL believe something different.

Like I said, teaching is not so much different as worship is. Worship is the biggest difference in the branches of Christianity (Protestants). I think the word 'literal' is a bit too vague for what I'm trying to explain. For instance, during the 2nd coming of Christ, there is a verse in 1 Thessalonians that describes the coming of Jesus. "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:" Look at the last part, 'the dead in Christ shall rise first,' many churches translate this differently. I believe it means our bodies because we are already in Heaven with God when we take our last breath. Adventists believe it is the body and soul and that we are only 'asleep' in the grave until He comes. There's many other scripture verses that even Christians debate on... that one is a big topic.

I know for an absolute fact that UCC does not believe this. Are they not Protestant? (Actual question. I always thought any Christian sect that was not Catholic is Protestant. This may not be true, I suppose.)

They all use the King James Bible, don't they? Therefore the scriptures are all translated exactly the same. The Bible is supposed to be Truth. You can't reinterpret Truth. It's absolute. Therefore, if there is an alternate belief, the Bible is not being taken literally, it's being interpreted to fit their religion. Therefore, logic dictates they do not adhere to strict interpretation.

What is the UCC?
Yes, if you are not Catholic, then you are most likely Protestant or you could be in the third division; Orthodox. And if you are a part of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) or Jehovah's Witnesses, you are not included with the 'Protestants.'

Sometimes churches like to use the NIV or other translation of the Bible. And yes, the text is translated the same, but to certain people, it may mean a different thing. Also, the scripture verse that I provided above is an example for this.

Christina, No way in hell do 98% of protestants believe in the bible literally.

Okay, then tell me which branches don't. So I will know next time...

18 to drink in a pub/bar , but under that you can have like a shandy or wine with a meal.

16 for cigarettes and age of consent but soon you will have to be 18 to get cigarettes as too many young girls are smoking

17 to learn to drive (becoming 18 soon)

And i agree with yoir germany idea. In most european countries children are given small amounts of alchohol, usually wine from about age 7. I recently went to belgium and heard that they had no problem serving 16 year olds in pubs.

17 to learn to drive (becoming 18 soon)

Wow, it's 15 here.

15????

Cars are a lot more expenisve here though, as is petrol and insurance for younger drivers (cant drive without valid licence, insurance and M.O.T safety certificate)

How much is petrol in the US?

Its about 94p per litre here on a good day- thats what, $1.90?

Was about £1 at height of Iraq war, before that used to be about 70p - 85p

You can have a moped at age 16 though so it kinda evens out. Quite funny really as at college theres now moped gangs......

Petrol? Meaning gas? It's $2.89 per gallon here.

How many litres is a gallon?

And yeah , i mean "gas". Its just here we call it petrol so it doesnt get confused with the other gas (as in the invisible actually gassy one)

Ahh.. I see.
1 US gallon = 3.7854118 liters

That means your petrol/gas is much cheaper than ours. Maybe thats we have more efficient, smaller cars.

I think it's 21 to drink, 18 to smoke (Why the hell would you want to??), 18 to buy pornography (lol.. I just figured I'd through that in), and 16 to get a driver's permit, you get a legal license at the age of 18.

These are the laws in Texas, I don't know if they are so in many of the other states..

18 to buy pornography - same here but you can have the real thing when you are 16 - wtf is up with that....

How old do you have to be to buy a gun then, 18? Cos that guy who did the VT massacre did not look that old

You must be 18 to purchase a rifle or shotgun. 21 to purchase a handgun. The dude had to have been at least 18, b/c he was in college. (As I said earlier.. Most Americans attend high school from the age of 15-18 and then college from 18+)

"but you can have the real thing when you are 16" What do you mean by this?

Ah, i was just wondering.

All handguns are banned here due to the dunblane massacre. The Firearms (Amendment) Act 1997, banned all remaining .22 cartridge handguns, and leaving only muzzle-loading and historic handguns legal, as well as certain sporting handguns (e.g. "Long-Arms")

Also of historical interest is this guy. He injured over 30 people using an AK-47, allegedly after watching rambo 1st blood

ahh ic.. Does that apply to the entire UK? I never quite understood how the UK functioned in relation to its states/provinces

Oh, were you referring to prostitution?

No i wasnt, prostitution is illegal.

I jut meant that anyone can freely have sex with anyone if they are both over 16.

And yeah handguns are illegal but World War one and before weapons are classed as historical and can be kept, as can muzzzle loaders e.g muskets. Farmers and people who shoot at a shooting club can still get long arms but its strictly regulated.

In the past couple of years this man shot a burgular with a shotgun killing him and he was ruled to have acted illegally. There is NO US style "make my day" law in the UK.

Refresh your browser btw, i just edited my last post.

Wow, seriously? That's a bunch of bull! What was the dude supposed to do while the burglar broke into his house? Just greet him with a nice 'ello'? lol.. (I love that commercial about Kellogg's when that guy says 'ello guvnor')

Here in Texas, if someone breaks into your house, you have a right to shoot him/her dead.

I love "innocent until proven guilty"!;)

He was 23.

In WV, it's 15 to get a learner's, 16 to get a driver's with restrictions, 18 to get unrestricted, and 21 to get a 'legal license.'

ohhic

Yeah, I love Texas. I've been to Austin and San Antonio. (I know, I know... off topic!)

lol.. I've never been to WV.. Actually, I haven't ever been anywhere outside the U.S.

Are WV laws concerning smoking and drinking the same in texas? Is the drinking age decided nationally?

I've been to Japan and Korea. And you don't want to go to WV... it sucks lol.
Yeah, I think the drinking age is the same everywhere. (in the US)

japan and korea? Did you like it there? Or did it completely suck?

Yeah, mainly I was in Korea. It's really crowded. The capitol, Seoul, is the size of Chicago but has the same amount of people in it as NYC. It's pretty cool.. I might go again next summer.

ive been to lots of places too but as of recent years i seem to be doomed only to go to scotland :(

Christina, this is more directed at you then anyone else.

I was curious the other day, because I knew that you took the Bible literally.

With that being the case, then how do you treat all of the Holy Laws found in Leviticus?

Though I do believe the Bible to be the inspired Word of God, we only consider the New Testament as the law to govern our lives. For example, in the Old Testament, you had to sacrifice a spotless lamb in the tabernacle to become "sinless," but when Jesus came, that all changed because He was the "Lamb" that the world had been searching for. No longer do we have to sacrifice every time we commit a sin, but we have freedom in Jesus.

Ah ok, understood.

Thanks!
