I would say...
- by reading articles about various affiliate programs and affiliate networks
- developing a list of specific questions questions that are relater to the subject and asking community to clarify them in details
- calling up to few affiliate networks and understanding their models and requirements, asking for their advise by simply stating your needs
- speaking with those who succeeds in affiliate marketing (both as advertisers and publishers) to understand all dos and donts
- trying few tests with various partners to see what will work the best for you
