And what is Trending? An odd name for something :)

Twitter invented that word ;). It's like "current trends" put into one word.

Just to put in one more comment:

At first glance, the site looks nice. It loads faster than it did before and there are neat things here and there like the menus and some improvements (I've already gotten used to the post layout within a thread, for example). But in the forums, it isn't usable. The large fonts in the Java forum, for example, are driving me crazy. It is too hard to tell what threads I haven't responded to, what threads I have responded to that have new posts since my last response. And a quick glance over the forum threads does not give me an idea of how many people need help or how many new threads have been posted recently.

I do find the forum list entries have too much vertical height so that not enough list entries fit on the page. With a little tweaking with Stylish (on FF) I came up with the following (before and after shots).

Basically I

  • Reduced the font size by about 20%

  • Reduced the margin round each entry from 20px+(?) to 2px
  • Darkened the link that appears between each entry

To me this makes the forum list much more readable while still preserving, more or less, the new look and feel.

Another usability "enhancements" found:

I open multiple threads in TABs all the time. In order to get to the first unread post, we now have to click a link after opening the thread to get there. But, when I close a thread I'm done with using the TAB exit, the next TAB is displayed. In order to click the "First Unread" link, I must drag my mouse through the auto-expanding forum bar which then obscures the link. Now I have to move the mouse off target to get the menu off screen then reverse direction to get to the link.

This doesn't sound like much, but I'd like to see you spend some time (an hour) opening up multiple tabs, and clicking that link. When you've done it 30 times you get very annoyed. After 50+ -- guess what!

Some functionality is really cool. But when that coolness interferes with day-to-day operation, it's uncool.

Thought I saw this mentioned earlier but can't find it- why do I have to reload current page to get New to change to read? Annoying! Later---

To be honest I liked the old style more. this new color is beating my eyes in the early morning. I'm used to surf this site every morning to slowly wake up but now the "slowly" part fails since I get hit with purple and laaaaarge fonts.

Also some of the links bring me to unexpected locations. Just like "Mark forums as read" redirect me to another forum o.O

If I would have to choose between new features and a eye-friendly design I sure would vote for the eye-friendly one.

Bring the old style and its functions back plzzzzzzzz

Another useful addition I think:

On the quick reply box the is a shortcut button # for "Wrap code-tags round selected text". On the advanced reply box as well as # for code tags there is <Green Boxy Thing> for "Wrap code-tags round selected text".

Having the <Green Boxy Thing> button on the quick reply box would be an improvement, albeit a minor one.

Not quite sure what "TEX" is for so can't comment about that.

this happens every time she changes it, a few people say it sucks, then everyone gets used to it

Not "everyone".
Some will silently leave and others will never join (or at least stay) in the first place.

To convert this:
c = sqrt(a ^ 2 + b ^ 2)

to this:
[tex]c = sqrt(a ^ 2 + b ^ 2)[/tex]

do this:
[tex]c = sqrt(a ^ 2 + b ^ 2)[/tex]

The "tex" button does it for you.

The [code] button spelled out, watermark in the editor window, and Code Explanation page are all coming back. The "New" button in thread listings is also coming back. So is solved threads and reputation within posts.

HURRAY!!
It is maybe possible to place "views" back also (between Reaction and Popularity)?

Hi,
Can you do something about the dropdown menus hiding behind the google ads in IE8? I can't navigate the site properly :(

Yes, investigating that (Google issue).

Popularity is an algorithm based on replies and views. You can hover over it to see the number of views.

Popularity is an algorithm based on replies and views.

I figured that out already. Some post with 18 replies don't seem popular while others with only 2 replies are :confused:

You can hover over it to see the number of views.

Why are all the good things from the old site gone, hidden or unreadable ?

Most of the old site was good. That made the old site a pleasant place to be.

Now even Daniweb has the same color theme [purple] as my company's website :( .I see purple even in my dreams now! :icon_frown:

Anyways, The layout looks nice and is definitely faster than before. But I have a few complaints.

1. Mouseover quote. It really hurt my eyes to follow the dancing browser.
2. Laaarge "Post reply to this thread" and "Use advanced Editor" when compared to the buttons "Submit Reply" and "Preview Post" in Advanced editor. Even the font size is inconsistent throughout the website.
3. "Mark this forum read" redirects me to the main category! Not sure if it was made this way or a bug.
4. As it has been discussed numerous times already, "Click to hide/show forums" toggle is hard to find.
5. I can't right click on 1 Day Ago and open the thread in a new tab/window. I now have to open the thread, scroll to the end of the page [or press End key] and then click on the last number.
6. I didn't like the integration of voting sytem with the reputation system. If I downvoted someone, I could still give positive rep in the old layout. Now, If I make a mistake, I can't do anything about it!
7. My Favorite Forums, the text looks odd and out of place. No alignment, mixture of CAPS and small case. Eg.

Community Introductions 33 MINUTES AGO

But I like the static bottom menu though. It's handy.
9. Social groups are redundant now ? Not that they were used extensively before. But now, they just exist and serve no purpose.
10. Dropdown menu items tend to go behind the stats in the user profile. Eg, software development.
Edit: 11. Also "First unread" link next to the thread title looks sloppy.
It will take some time to get used to the new layout though.

I know most points have been discussed over and over again, but I felt like saying it anyway.

But, Good work overall.. Thumbs up Dani! :)

Im liking the new "first unread" button, it even looks good! :P

Not me. It makes no sense. Clicking the NEW icon is what makes sense. Adter all, it already turns the cursor into a hand so it's a link. It's just a link to nowhere.

*DO NOT* I repeat *DO NOT* click on the NEW icon! It works the same was as it always has ... It is a hand because you are a moderator and clicking on it automatically locks the thread. This is a vBulletin feature which has always existed. Because of this, I cannot make the New icon be the link, which would obviously be ideal.

Sorry, there never was a "lock thread" that I new of at the beginning of a post description. I always clicked on NEW and got to the first post.

So, if it was always there, it was hidden (or not obvious), and the NEW icon changed look as well as function in this rollout.

Glad to see the "First Unread" button, but would rather the New button did the same thing, as it did in the old version of DaniWeb.

I still miss the pencil, or some other way to tell the threads that I have posted in.

It would be nice to have a color selection option in our Profile so that everyone can customize DaniWeb anyway they want. I think I've seen that in some sites. There are some places that even allow me to customize the entire theme.

I still miss the pencil,

I do too. I thought it was a really nice thing to have. It gave a really quick way that meant you could see the threads that you had posted in without looking too hard.

Also i am missing the old feature that unread threads would be bold, and threads that had no replies would also have some kind of distinction.

OK, gonna stop bitchin', coz I bin doin'.

Using Stylish and Greasemonkey in FF, I've been able to blast my pet hate, the confusion of New Posts and have I or haven't I posted to them.

Here's the GM script:

// ==UserScript==
// @name           Daniweb - Post Hell!
// @namespace      head
// @include        http://www.daniweb.com/*
// @description    Daniweb Makeover - Ardav's Revenge
// @version        1.0
// @copyright      2010 Alan Davies
// ==/UserScript==

var allElements, thisElement;
allElements = document.evaluate(
    '//td[@title]',
    document,
    null,
    XPathResult.UNORDERED_NODE_SNAPSHOT_TYPE,
    null);
for (var i = 0; i < allElements.snapshotLength; i++) {
    tit = allElements.snapshotItem(i);
     if(tit.title.substring(0,8) == "You have"){
		tit.innerHTML = '<img src="http://....../css/images/me.gif" />';
     }
}

...... = my website

Hope it helps. I made the new image a small purple button (ironic ain't it):

Also i am missing the old feature that ... threads that had no replies would also have some kind of distinction.

You mean like 0 replies at the right side of the thread line?

Yeah, i appreciate that is there. I just enjoyed it when there used to be a bold emphasis on those ones. Just easier to spot.. i understand i am being lazy, but its just a feature i kind liked.

But mainly i would like to see the pencil back, and unread threads being bold

Ah! Thank you Dani - NEW icons now changed to inverse target if you've already posted. Can pull the Greasemonkey now. Brilliant. This is the feature that was giving me the nosebleed. OK - DW now usable again - for me anyway. Any other bugbears I have are purely purple, ahem, cosmetic, I mean.

//EDIT

Spoke too soon. ANy idea why some of my posts show the inverted target and some still show NEW? Also the "Threads I've Posted In" aren't shown in date order (last post) - well as far as I can tell - how are they sorted?

>> ANy idea why some of my posts show the inverted target

I think the 'inverted target' means that it is a 'hot' thread. This was previously a little flame-icon next to the thread-title.
I could be wrong however.

A legend was added to the bottom of the forum listing pages yesterday. Guess you guys missed it.

Thanks. I indeed missed it. I'm also glad the forum-listings are back, with the double-clickable mark-forum-read folder-icons :)
Why has the "view first unread" button been removed? I was real glad to see it back.
