Okay, so I've been having issues with my computer. First, my Windows Automatic Updates weren't working, but I think I've got that fixed. Now, my background is a solid light blue, and I can't change it in the Display menu. I'd really appreciate some help.

I have AVG, Malwarebytes, and Ad-Aware, but none of them have found anything. (Earlier, Malwarebyes got rid of a bunch of stuff, see first two logs below). I also have ZoneAlarm, now set on the high levels. When I thought I had everything under control, the background changed colors and I got a strange virus notification in my tray. ZoneAlarm told me that frmwrk32.exe was trying to access the internet. I looked it up on the internet and clicked 'deny' and then killed the process through the task manager....but my background is still stuck.

So, first, are the logs from earlier today, and then a log from hijackthis from a few minutes ago. A merry chirstmas indeed.

Oh, also, before all of this happened, my task manager was really wierd (as in, since I got the computer a year and a half ago), in that it had no menus at the top, and I could only view applications. But it's normal now. Strange.

Thanks so much for your help. : )

ETA: I have a fingerprint scanner, too, and while it works to start the computer, I get a logon error at the user screen, and I have to type in the password, whereas it usually goes right through with my previous fingerprint. Don't know if that's important.

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

==========

Do you know what C:\WINDOWS\kass.exe is? If not, please go to Jotti's or to virustotal and have it scanned. Post the results back here.

====

Can you please do the following.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following, if present:

Viewpoint Manager,Viewpoint Media Player,Viewpoint Toolbar

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

O24 - Desktop Component 0: Ink Desktop - {80E95280-2D38-3CB8-A215-FB5F14C4343E}

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gehumuro.dll

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Thanks for the welcome. : )

Though I don't know what C:\WINDOWS\kass.exe is, Jotti's didn't have a problem with it.

I uninstalled Viewpoint Media Player.

I also 'fixed' all of the things you told me to, except for
O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
because it wasn't there anymore when I scanned again, I assume because I uninstalled the program.

Although viewing hidden files/folders, neither of the two were present.

Upon rebooting my computer, the fingerprint thing didn't work, I got the bogus security warning, and my task manager said that it was disabled by the administrator. Sad.

So I reran hijackthis, and here's the log:

Could it be
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

? It seemed to go along with the no name/no file theme of before.

Thanks again for your help.

Try this for now;

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Here it is. I have no idea what it's saying, enjoy.

....and now I can change my background and get to my task manager, though the logon bit still doesn't work. I can deal with that though. Thanks for your help, and if you have any more advice, I'd love to hear it.

I thought that Smitfraufix would have picked up what MBAM just found :(.

I would run the following if you are still having problems.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Physically disconnect from the internet.
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Here's the combofix log:

I don't have any more serious problems, but my fingerprint scanner won't log me on to windows. But as I said before, I can deal with that. Thanks for all the help. You rock.

I am not seeing anything else untoward in your log, other than that kass.exe file you uploaded to Jottis.

Let's see if we can get some info on it.

1. Please open Notepad Click Start , then Run
Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

FileLook::
C:\WINDOWS\kass.exe

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Physically disconnect from the internet.

5. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

6. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

7. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next replyafter youre-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix:Combofix.txt
A new HijackThis log.
Please take note:

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Aha! After reading the log of the combofix on the kass.exe, I figured out what was going on. The program's something I need in order to access certain programs on my school's network, that only a certain number of people can use at a time.

But here's the log:

How's things now?

Things are okay...a bit ago, zonealarm asked me if I wanted to allow a.exe access to the internet. I looked it up and it seemed sketchy, so I denied it access. It's in my system32 file, and I scanned it with malwarebyes and AVG, neither of which had a problem with it, but I don't trust it...it's even got a scary little triskelion icon shape. What should I do with it?

See if you can manually delete it. If it will not delete, post back.

Please use the Internet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.Once the files are downloaded click on Next
Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows: Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:Extended

Scan Options:Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

To obtain the report:
Click on:Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

You need to clear the Java cache. To clear the Java Plug-in cache:

  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
    The Java Control Panel appears.
  • Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.
    The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
  • Click Delete Files.
    The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.

There are three options on this window to clear the cache.

  • Delete Files
  • View Applications
  • View Applets
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
    Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
  • Click OK on Temporary Files Settings window.

Did that a.exe file delete ok?

Yes, a.exe deleted just fine, and I've cleared my java cache. I still can't log on to windows with my fingerprint though; that's the only thing that seems to be wrong yet. Here's another hijackthis log, just for kicks. :)

Once again, thanks for all your help.

Not sure about the log-on. Is there a disc to install the software for that?
Your log looks ok now though.

There is quite possibly a cd for that, but I'm not sure. If there is, it's at school, approximately 500 miles away. I guess I'll just have to wait in suspensful expectation until I go back next month. Thanks again. You're the best. : )

You are welcome :).
