Yesterday I upgraded to Safari 6.0 and like the combined address and search field but the "delete" key is gone. I kept pressing in frustration last night until I found the shortcut. Don't know if this worked in earlier versions because I never tried it but in Safari 6 pressing the "Command/Apple" and either the left or right arrow keys simultaneously moves the page back or forward.

The only way to go back apart from clicking the icon is to use the two finger gesture on the trackpad.
