How to set up your Wireless Command Center

Setting up your own personal wireless command center isn’t difficult; it will only take up a couple of minutes. But why would anyone want to setup a remote desktop connection? The answer is so that you can access and control your personal computer wirelessly, by using just your mobile. No need to go all the way to your desktop upstairs just to do a petty task that can be done while sitting on a couch in front of a television. You’ll have to play with it to understand the extent of remote computing. Much depends on the application that is being used. Here, we will talk about a single application for iPhone, but other capable applications will also be mentioned if you ever want to try those out. So let’s not waste time and begin.

Set-up

The best app for the iPhone is HippoRemote Pro app available in AppStore for $4.99. The basic version costs $0.99 and the lite is free. The great thing about this app is that it works with Windows, Mac and Linux, so no need to panic.

Here is how you set up screen share between your iPhone, iPad or iPod and your Mac.

  1. Open your Mac’s System Preferences
  2. Click Sharing
  3. Check the box that says Screen Sharing
  4. Now launch HippoRemote on your mobile and login with your Mac user name and password. And start having fun!

To set up screen share with Windows the easiest way to do this is to download iTunes and HippoRemote will detect your computer but if not please do have a look at the HippoRemote website.

Printer

To connect remotely through your Apple product, you will have to download AirPrint from AppStore. AirPrint is relatively easy to use and it supports many different printers. Just press the print button and it will detect a nearby wireless printer.

Scanner

Why connect to a scanner when your iPhone can be one. Yes, the Scanner Pro apps does what a real printer does.

Other apps worth mentioning are:

  1. Keymote
  2. Remote Jr.
  3. Eye TV
  4. Snatch

Once you have worked your way through the set up, remember to play with different apps so you may know which suits you. Different apps would let you do different things. Have fun remoting!
