On a Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop, clicking was heard upon start up, then primary hard disk 0 not found. Bought a new hard drive and installed it, but am getting the same message. The hard disk is not recognized in the BIOS.

Is there anything I need to do when installing a new hard drive to get it to be recognized? format? partitioning? Not too computer savvy...

You need to set the jumper settings (read the info which came with your drive, and the settings which are printed on the drive cover itself).
You also need to format and partition your drive. If you are installing an operating system onto the new drive, the installer will be able to handle this. If not, the info is easily found on the web.
