Hi, I am looking for a little help! I have Windows XP on my Dell laptop. I run Norton Antivirus and recently had my laptop serviced for virus and malware issues. Everything has been running fine, no problems detected by Norton's. My only problem now is that I the control panel icon is gone from my start menu and I cannot access it, the add/remove programs feature, the clock, or any other control panel features. I get a message saying access has been restriced and I should contact the administrator. My user is set as administrator. I have no idea what I should do, any help would be appreciated!!!

I saw on other posts that a HijackThis scan was helpful so I ran one and here is the log file....

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :)

  • Save it to your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)
  • Click on your START button and choose Run. Then copy/paste the entire content of the following quotebox (Including the "" marks and the Symbols) into the run box.

    "%userprofile%\desktop\ComboFix.exe" /KillAll

  • Click OK and this will start ComboFix.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to a Notepad File and include it in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

* Re-enable all the programs that were disabled prior to the running of ComboFix.

* Post the following logs/Reports:

  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Hello, I'm having the exact same problem so I hope you dont mind if you can help me as well?

Hi KeiLana.

First of all- welcome to Daniweb :).

We ask that members not piggy-back questions on to a thread previously started by another member here in the Viruses, Spyware & other Nasties forum, (regardless of how similar your problem might seem). Not only does it divert the focus of the thread away from the original poster's problem, but it also makes it less likely that you yourself will get the individual attention that you need.

Please start your own thread and post your question there. When you do, please try to give us as much specific info as possible regarding the problem (exact error messages, system specs, etc.).

Download HijackThis from here. Download it to your desktop and NOT a temporary folder.
Start HJT & press the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. When the scan is finished a window will pop up giving you the option of where to save it. Save it to desktop where it is easy to access. Open the log file and copy the entire contents of the file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is necessary for the running of your system.

Thanks for understanding.

hi poprock, try going to the command line then go to windows\system32 directory, then type appwiz.cpl then enter it should pop-up the add/remove programs, if this doesn't help there must be some virus or other nasty programs that is causing trouble to your system, better reformat and install a fresh OS..LOL

Try running This

windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/EnableTM.reg

For Task Manager if it dosnt work its because registy editing is diabled also I used this program I found on the web but I cant find it again and it unlocked the registy so I could change the value of Nocontrolepanel from (1) to (0) Ill look for the Rigistyfix I uased I still have it on my hdd but i cant find the download site. But if it dosnt work hold onto it.

Sorry for the double post but I found the registry fix its located here http://www.taskmanagerfix.com/dl/download.php?id=2

This will enable registy editing if its disabled and from there you should be able to manualy enable the control panel OR use http://www.pctools.com/mirror/tminstall.exe If you use the auto program (recommend) then when you install it open it up then on the side bar look for security + that then there should be an option for Conrtol Panel + That and then look for something called liek No control Panel or Disable Control Panel something of the sory click that once thats open in the main part it should come up so if they are checked or one is checked make sure you unchecked both. You may have to reset after that and if it dosnt work then let me know then I'll show you how to enable it it manualy if you dont know how. (Sorry for typo's I'm in a hurry trying to fix this other laptop ATM and some other things I have to do)

So if you dont have any control over registy editing run the first program i put in on this post that should enable it, Then for the task Manager use the program in the other link in my previous post then for CP enable it manualy or automatically with second program in this post

I Had the same problem with this laptop next to me that was virused up that I'm helping a Uncle fix and this and the previous post I posted gave me back the Admin Rights.

Due to lack of response, I am closing this thread. If the original poster wishes to reopen it, please PM either myself, or the other Mods overseeing this forum.
Thank you.
