hi everyone,

i guess you already know this annoying little message that pops-up every few minutes -
"
CRITICAL SYSTEM ERROR
your computer was infected by a trojan.
it's dangerous for your computer, some files can be lost!

click OK to download the antispyware program to clean your system! (recomended)
"
i read a little here and there and made a HJT log and downloaded "SmitfraudFix" (though haven't done anything with it yet)

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

Search for...

ALCMTR.EXE

...using "Start | Search...".

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

Reboot.

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.

Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
Close when finished.

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, AVG anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them all on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

Gidday mate,

I have the same problem. This is obviusly a new trojan that probably just came out. Maybe we could work this out together as I am trying everything to fix it.

I found the trojan file. It is called oggview.dll. You can find it in WINDOWS from C:

You can not delete it as it says that it is being used from another application. That is all BS. It is apart of the trojan.

Also, if you go to Google, when you type something in, does it come up with a few porn results? That is apart of the trojan too.

Make sure when that error message comes up, never click OK. THat will make things worse!

I am trying my best to fix, and if I do...I swear I'll get back to you!

Hi.

Yes oggview.dll is a new downloader trojan, member of the FakeAlert (aka SmitFraud) - malware family - IEDefender (popups).

If you are infected, just use SmitfraudFix - it's free & it's powerfull !

Thank you very much for your time and effort.

i followed the steps you said. i did everything but finding & deleting the oggview.dll file, since it wasn't anywhere to be found after the HiJackThis "Fix checked" action.

anyways, it seems the problem is solved. the pop-up is gone and everything is back to normal.

Hi.
Yes oggview.dll is a new downloader trojan, member of the FakeAlert (aka SmitFraud) - malware family - IEDefender (popups).
If you are infected, just use SmitfraudFix - it's free & it's powerfull !

I followed your suggestion by using SmitFraud and it worked like a charm. One problem I had was that my usual Vista interface wouldn't come back up after I cleaned the spyware and did a reboot. I tried going to the start up Menu and starting in normal mode several times but still only the classic interface would come up minus my personalized settings. I finally had to do a system restore (to the latest restore point, 9 am this morning) and that did the trick.

I know precisely when my computer was infected (around 5 or 6 pm today) so it was a safe bet restoring to this morning.

Crunchie I first was about to try your suggestion, but this worked fine w/o me having to d/l HiJackThis...but thanks for the suggestion as well.
