My internet explorer is opening itself, but it doesn't fully open. I use Firefox and not IE. When I'm not using my laptop it stays powered on and logged in under my bed. If I happened to leave the speakers on I will hear the link click noise repeatedly. At no time does an IE window pop up aside from a box saying "Click here to activate Active X control". There have even been times when it plays audio from a movie trailer or advertisement. This morning in particular I was awoken by some Hip-Hop song I'd never heard in my life and that makes it worse because I can't stand Hip-Hop. In Windows Task Manager, IE shows up as a process but not in applications. I have Webroot Spy Sweeper with a subscription that ends in March of next year. It finds all kinds of spyware, malware, and viruses just like it should but apparently cannot find this problem. I have the HijackThis Report, here it is:

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

==========

First of all could you click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs and uninstall 'Window Search', 'Window Searching', 'Lop.com', 'LOP SEARCH', 'Browser Enhancer', or 'Ultimate Browser Enhancer' if listed. You may be given a code to insert, do so and reboot when done. If not listed there, run the Lop Remover from:
http://66.220.17.157/help.html

==

Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following, if present:

Viewpoint Manager

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Next, Open a command prompt by:

1. Clicking "Start", then "Run...".
2. Enter "cmd" (without the quotes).
3. Enter "services.msc" (without the quotes).

-

Now, locate and 'stop' the following services, if present:

Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation ... (C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe)

Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services. Once stopped, set this service to disabled.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

O21 - SSODL: VolumeKernel - {a6622566-f830-4864-abd8-26e73bb70e48} - C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{a6622566-f830-4864-abd8-26e73bb70e48}\VolumeKernel.dll
O21 - SSODL: zip - {dc8649b9-5eb7-4613-b7ad-79e45ba069f4} - (no file)

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{a6622566-f830-4864-abd8-26e73bb70e48}

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

IE no longer opens. Thank you so much! My Spy Sweeper doesn't have to go into overdrive anymore. Thanks again!

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.

  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
  3. Close when finished.

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, AVG anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them all on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
