IE 6.0 Won't Search

Ok When I type a query in my IE search box it wont search I get a:

" The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for might have been removed or had its name changed.

Please try the following:

Open the home page, and then look for links to the information you want.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

If you still cannot open the page, click the Internet Explorer
Search button to look for similar sites.

It all started when my silly husband was on the computer and was clicking away and we got some spyware. I quickly repremanded him and ran the Ad-Aware 6.0 to remove it and then a Mc-Afee virus scan just incase. I also had to go into Add remove programs because some stuff got downloaded into the HD. To be more specific, a search bar client so I removed that. Ever since I did all of this the IE 6.0 search bar has never worked. The Yahoo Search bar campanion works fine. I went and redownloaded IE 6.0 thinking maybe that would help but still the same thing. Has this happened to anyone else befor? Does anyone know any way to fix this outside of reloading the entire operating system? I really do not want to wipe my hard drive as I do not have any way to back up my files. :eek: I have a Dell i86oo Laptop I am running Windows XP Home Editon Version 2002, Sevice Pack 2. First of all, you need to find a way to back up any data you don't want to lose because sooner or later something will happen to cause you to lose it. You can get a CD burner or even a flash drive -- anything is better then nothing!

Roxie, you need to post your HJT log in the Security forum (there is a notice about this at the top of the forum).

Oh, and put it in a permanent folder first (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe) so it can safely save backups! And close all browser windows before scanning with it.

You can't save a program to wordpad,just text documents !!!copy it to permanent folder is refering to the hijackthis.exe program you downloaded ,not the log it creates.

Yes....I did save Hijackthis pragram to a permanent file. I was referring to the log that I scanned with the Hijackthis program is what i saved to wordpad...not the program itself. Sorry for the confusion.

What the others meant is that your log shows that you are running HijackThis from within a Temp/Temporary folder ( C:\Documents and Settings\Stephanie Walker\Local Settings\Temp\HijackThis.exe in your case). I won't go into the details of why, but you should create a new and separate folder for HijackThis, and that folder should not live within/under any Temp folder.

HJT cannot perform all of the fixes it needs to if Internet Explorer is running when you attempt the fixes; you need to make sure IE is not running when you do the following, and it's a good idea to close down any other open programs as well.

Ok DMR thanks I understand what you are saying about the Hijackthis being saved to a temp file. I went and saved it to my desk top now. Can someone please tell me if this is right now? Is this what is meant by saving it to a permanent file? If not I need more detailed instructions. I am a rookie so I am kinda feeling my way through this the best I can. Oops! you were posting while I was! But now you have it directly on your desktop which isn't any better. Sorry this is turning into so much trouble, please read the following to explain why and how to put HJT in a suitable folder:

Roxie, the last log you posted still shows your HJT in a temp folder, if you have moved it into a permanent folder since then, please post a new log. This is for your safety as HJT needs to be in a permanent folder in order to safely save backups in case something goes wrong. Here are crunchie's instructions for doing this (if you haven't already):
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.

OK. Just to end the confusion :). The desktop is a permanent folder, but it is undesireable to run hijackthis directly from there. The reasoning behind this is that when hijackthis performs it's fixes, backups are created in whichever folder it resides in, at the moment, desktop. You will therefore end up with backups all over your desktop that are likely to be deleted because you may not know what they are :). That can then create further problems. Just create a new folder on your desktop and drag and drop hijackthis.exe into that folder and run it from there.
Now that you know that, I will start your fix :).

Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked':

I am PLEASED to say that my IE is now searching normally! I am not sure if this is the END of the problem. I will leave that determination to you experts. I must now go re-download ad-aware as that somehow got corrupted through all of this. I also have spyware buster. I am receptive to any recommendations on this to be sure to what happened to me does not happen again. I am aware of spyware and how you get infected with it,...it is my husband that I have to worry about...he likes to get a little click happy with every pop up that comes along. For example he clicks the "no" instead of the "x"...I keep telling him that when it comes to pop ups, their no means yes.

As for the part about clicking on the "x" instead of "no" -- sometimes their "x" means "yes" too. The best thing to do is right-click and select Close.

Did you mean to say Spyware Buster or SpywareBlaster? I'm not familiar with the first one, but if you don't have Blaster, you should -- there is a link to it in crunchie's signature. Keep that and your Windows Updates current and you will be protected from a lot of problems.

Yes it is SpyWareBlaster. My bad. I made a mistake when I typed that. Thanks for that info. I will be right clicking and choosing Close from now on.
