Homepage for IE keeps resetting to about:blank

Hi ,

I use WIN 2000 and recently got a virus which keeps reloading my homepage to blank. Above that it also has corrupted my IE page and 5 times outta 10 it shuts the page down saying an error has occured.

I downloaded CWSshredder and ran it, but the problem still persists. Reading this forum i downloaded the latest version of Hijack this and heres the log. HELP !!

You need to get IE6 (Internet Explore 6) and get the Critical Updates for it.

Before fixing anything with HijackThis, you should move it into it's own folder; right-click on your desktop, select New, Folder, and name it something like HJT. Then drag the hijackthis.exe icon that is on your desktop into that folder.

After this is done, post a new log please.

You also need service pack 4 for W2K.

okay, i've got IE 6 and have service pack 4, have run ADware, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, CWshredder, SpyGaurd, Symantec Back door agent remover and then ran the HJT scan. Heres the log:

Download about:Buster and unzip it to your Desktop. Doubleclick on AboutBuster.exe to run it and then click on Update > Check for Update. If there is an update available, click on 'Download Update and wait while it downloads. Once downloaded, click on Exit.

When you have done this, boot into Safe Mode (restart your PC and tap F8 as it restarts) and make sure that you can view hidden files and folders.

Close all open windows and run Hijack This again. Check the below entries and click on Fix Checked.

Close Hijack This and run about:Buster again, click the 'Start' button and then click the 'OK' button. Let it scan (the scan can take some time to complete, so be patient.). Once the first scan has completed, it will ask you if you wish for about:Buster to scan once more. Click Yes and let it scan a second time. Once the second scan has finished, copy and paste the report to Notepad and save it on your drive.

To copy and paste the report to a log file, select (highlight) all of the text produced by the scan with your mouse, right-click and select 'Copy'.

Next, launch Notepad (click Start > Run > type notepad.exe and press enter). When the file is open, rightclick and select Paste. Click on File > Save As and save it in C:\ as Log.txt. Copy the log and post it back in this thread when you have rebooted.

While still in Safe Mode, run a search and make sure that all of the below files in bold have been deleted (if not delete them):

Reboot, reset your Home Page and run a Housecall scan. It will get rid of any remaining files. Post a new Hijack This log (and your About Buster log).

Hi there,
Thanks for the direction. I followed instructions to the "T" and here is the HjT file log. Note that just before i ran the Housecall scan, my homepage was still reseting itself. It doesnt seem to have reset after housecall. Incidently housecall found about 36 Trojan files. Thanks for the advise and let me know if alls well with my laptop

about:Buster and unzip it to your Desktop. Doubleclick on AboutBuster.exe to run it and then click on Update > Check for Update. If there is an update available, click on 'Download Update and wait while it downloads. Once downloaded, click on Exit.

When you have done this, boot into Safe Mode (restart your PC and tap F8 as it restarts) and make sure that you can view hidden files and folders.

Close all open windows and run Hijack This again. Check the below entries and click on Fix Checked.

Close Hijack This and run about:Buster again, click the 'Start' button and then click the 'OK' button. Let it scan (the scan can take some time to complete, so be patient.). Once the first scan has completed, it will ask you if you wish for about:Buster to scan once more. Click Yes and let it scan a second time. Once the second scan has finished, copy and paste the report to Notepad and save it on your drive.

To copy and paste the report to a log file, select (highlight) all of the text produced by the scan with your mouse, right-click and select 'Copy'.

Next, launch Notepad (click Start > Run > type notepad.exe and press enter). When the file is open, rightclick and select Paste. Click on File > Save As and save it in C:\ as Log.txt. Copy the log and post it back in this thread when you have rebooted.

While still in Safe Mode, run a search and make sure that all of the below files in bold have been deleted (if not delete them):

Hi Again,

After i went through the steps, i find that my homepage is still getting changed. I have Spygaurd and it keeps popping up telling me that my browser's page is changing to various pages. (note i had changed in Spyware Blaster - tools , the blank webpages to google)
