Problem :
1. Automatic Popups
2. Home Page changes
3. SearchAssistant Uninstall (In add & remove programs)

OS : Windows 98

After scanning with Norton Antivirus, it detects a file ' bridge.inf ' infected with virus Adware.Winfavourites in the 'Downloaded Program Files'. But when I open the folder, no such file is found. Norton cannot delete the file.

Another file se.dll generates automatically in the temp folder. Norton detects it as Trojan.Startpage but cannot delete it.

For a temporary solution what I have done is - end the process rundll. Then delete the file se.dll manually. Then I run CWShredder. It changes the home page to auto:blank. Then I change the home page as I desire. And then I remove the SearchAssistantUninstall from the Add & Remove Programs. (Without this process when I wanted to remove SearchAssistant from Add & Remove programs, it shows "uninstall failed".)

But after 1 or 2 days the popups starts coming again. SearchAssistant Uninstall adds up in the Add & Remove programs. And after scanning with Norton it finds bridge.inf, se.dll and another dll file in the windows/system folder (like blph.dll)

Can anyone help for a permanent solution.

Please tell more about the change in the Registry, since I couldn't make any change there. If you can please be more specific about the changes in the Registry.

Yes, I use DAP.

After all these, I scanned the system with Norton and it detects a file bridge.inf in the c:/windows/downloaded program files infected with Adware.WinFavorites, but it cannot delete the file. But when I wanted to delete the file manually, I found there are no such file present in the folder.

After all these, I scanned the system with Norton and it detects a file bridge.inf in the c:/windows/downloaded program files infected with Adware.WinFavorites, but it cannot delete the file. But when I wanted to delete the file manually, I found there are no such file present in the folder.

(It's been so long since I've used Win98, I had to get out the old textbook for some of this, lol!)

Be sure you have your system set to show all files:
Double-click the My Computer icon
On the View menu, click Folder Options
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types
In the Advanced Settings box, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show all files
If you get a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply
Click OK

Now, use Find all files to search for bridge.inf (let it search all drives/partitions you have), and delete all instances found

Before making any changes to Registry Editor, you should back up the entire registry:
Click Start, and then Run; type scanregw, and then click OK
When you receive a prompt to back up the registry, click Yes
When you receive the "Backup complete" message, click OK

To access the Registry Editor, click Start, and then Run; type regedit, click OK, and the Registry Editor will open. It will be easier if all the folders showing have + signs next to them (there should be five); if there is a - sign, click on it and it will change to a +

Here's an example of how to find an item to edit:
You want to delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Win Server
Find the folder that says HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and click on the + and another list will show up
In that list, find Software and click the + (some of these lists will get pretty long and you may need to scroll down to find the one you're looking for)
The next one would be Microsoft, click the +
Then the + next to Windows
+ next to CurrentVersion
+ next to Server
When you find Win Server, right-click on it and select Delete. Then go on to the next one. It's tedious and time-consuming, but this is the best way to be sure everything is gone.
After you make all the recommend changes, exit the Registry

In addition to the other link I gave, follow the advice in this one as well:
http://www.2-spyware.com/remove-winfavorites.html

If DAP is not registered, you will get pop-up ads; more info here:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.dap.html

Your log looks better already; after you make the Registry changes recommended, please post a new HijackThis log.

Log may look better but popups has not stopped. Still the homepage is changing to searchpage, the file se.dll is generating in the temp folder and I am deleting the file manually. And new dll files are generating the system folder and I am also deleting the files manually or by CWShredder. Regarding the Registry cleaning I wanted to know exactly which entries I need to clean. I also read the ieplugin. But not such file is present. Regarding the bridge.inf file in the downloaded programes files folder, I couldn't find the file (after doing "view all files"). But Norton detects the file bridge.inf in that folder.

Is this a trojan virus? Kindly help me to get rid of this.

thanx to you for your responses.

Crunchie gave be a bit more advice, try this:

Download StartDreck from here:
http://www.niksoft.at/download/startdreck.htm

Unzip to its own folder and start the program

Press 'Config'
Press 'Unmark All'

Check the following boxes only:
Registry -> Run Keys
System/drivers> Running processes
Press 'Ok'

Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file
(default is the same folder as the application)

Post the log in this thread.

Might want to try this too;

Download CWShredder 2 from:
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Run it and press the *fix,* not scan, and allow it to clean the infection. Close all browser and explorer windows before hitting the fix button.

Download 'SpSeHjfix111' from here:
http://www.derbilk.de/404.html

Download it to your desktop and then right-click a blank part of desktop and select New, Folder; call it spfix, and then unzip the file into that folder.

Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.

Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".

When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process. The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage

Now run the Shredder - Hit The FIX button!

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Thanx to you once again.
After doing all these...... I had to reload windows, then only I could start my system. Now I don't know whether my system is cleaned or not. I have to wait and see for few days. But the new problem is when I start my machine and when windows starts it shows "Error loading MS6AB7E1.MFD". How to solve it. Will it make any problem in my system.
