Although your log does shows signs of infection, it doesn't show all of the usual fingerprints of Aurora. Have you already done some cleaning with your Microsoft AntiSpyware and/or other tools? If so, let us know what you've done so far.

Hi DMR, thanks for replying.

Yes, I have run Microsoft antispyware 3x, which still finds transponder.abetterinternet, Ad-aware 3x, but what I did over and above that was to go into regedit and found and deleted an aurora folder there.

I had also aborted the install part way through, of the program I had opened, so it may not have been a complete install, but it apparently was enough to give me the popups.

OK, that probably explains it then. Let's get rid of the leftovers:

1. Aurora drops hidden files in a few different locations. To see if we can identify those, go here and download Silent Runners.vbs. Run the program, and post the contents of the log it generates.

2. Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

- Install the program, open it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet though; just close the program once it is updated.

- Reboot into Safe Mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up).

- Once in Safe Mode, run Ewido, and do a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

3. Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Hi DMR, sorry I was late getting back to you.

For the life of me, I can not find the Silent Runners log after running and searching everywhere for it.

So I gave up and proceeded to get the ewido app, updated it like you said, not intending to run, but it did automatically, so I let it clean what it found, and rebooted. (so I was never in safe mode)

I've now run HijackThis again and here is the log. My task manager seems much better now, BTW.

The log from silent runners will be wherever you are running it from :). Try putting it in it's own folder and run it again. Wait for it to finish and the log should appear in the folder.

here's and silent runners log.....I couldnt find a ewido log anywhere in it's folder , so I'm having it do a full scan now, and it seems pretty thorough, so it looks like its going to be a while. I'll post it when its done, but here's the silent runners anyway.

yup, I just checked with regedit, and that aurora folder is back in there after I had deleted it yesterday. I'll await further instructions from you good people!

The Registry entries are there, but the FindIt's log doesn't show any actual Aurora-related files, which could be a Good Thing.

Let's see if we can delete the registry references:

A) Make a backup of your Registry. Instructions from Microsoft on how to do that in XP can be found here.

B) Copy the text in the box box below into a new, blank Notepad document and save the file to your desktop as FixAurora.reg:

I couldn't reboot to safe mode for some reason. I mean I would select it and all, but the pc would just reboot, so I had to choose normal. So I just did the rest of it anyway.

Well, after I posted my previous message, I stepped away from my pc for a couple of hours, only to come back and find that it had spontaneously rebooted and was waiting for a boot record.

When I proceeded, it went to the screen where you chose whether you want safe mode, safe mode with network support, last known good configuration, normal etc. etc.

The thing is, it doesnt matter which one I chose now, I'm in a loop where the HD makes sounds like windows is about to boot up, only to have it shutdown and reboot again. (I'm posting this from the girlfriends laptop actually)

I can get to a c: prompt (all folders visible) and all that if I use a win98 startup floppy, but damned if windows xp wont startup, it even shows the splash screen for xp but never makes it all the way.

I saved the backup.bak in a partition on the same drive that c: is on, (it was I: in windows) but that drive letter isnt accessible it seems. Any suggestions before I get a new HD and use the current one as a slave?

Just to give an update....

when I use a win98 startup disk, and have a look at fdisk, and c:dir, I have realized that c: is looking at a slave that is installed! This is probably why when windows tries to start, it just shuts down and reboots again. My primary is ntfs, but the slave i believe is fat32, which is probably why the win98 startup only sees that one (?)

Here's what I've done over the weekend now.

I've installed xp on another ntfs partition. All folders are available to me now, including the backup.bak that I created. Any ideas as to how I can repair that original install of xp? I now have a duel boot. I can't repair a registry that I can't get to right?
