HijackThis Log. Please help

So I'm on my dad's computer and it runs real slow so I tried running a few different softwares on it. First time I've ever used Hijack-this so if you could tell me what I could do with this log I would truly appreciate it.

Have you done things like run disk clean up, done a defrag of the hard drive and that type of thing?

Right there is a MAJOR problem. You CANNOT/Should Not run two anti-virus programs on the same computer. Makes both run incorrectly and likely reduces protection.

Does he have high speed internet? This is listed as one requirement for the Norton 360 program.

He is an AOL user, but he uses internet explorer to access his email.

AOL itself adds a HUGE amount of "stuff" onto a computer. All these allegedly "make things easier with AOL" just add a huge amount of unnecessary things supposedly to make computer usage easier. Much of the time the things it supposedly can make easier with just a "couple clicks" can easily be accomplished using the operating system built in procedures that only take "one click", especially with XP, it is one of the easiest operating systems to use by just using it's built in abilities.

The hard drive isn't being filled up it IS filled up as you have discovered by not being able to even run the defrag program. Picture trying to organize your canned goods in a kitchen cabinet while sitting inside the cabinet. There is no way you could even attempt to do that, without removing the majority of canned goods before climbing inside. This is the same reason you couldn't run the defrag program, it had no way to move around to re-arrange the files in proper order.

You are not going to be able to do anything on the computer until you get more space on the hard drive. You can go through manually and remove items, pictures, music, games, etc. and programs that he doesn't or has never used to regain some space but honestly the quicker way to speed things up with a computer that IS full, like this one, is reformat, if you have all the restore disks. A reformat/reload should only take you a couple hours to get it back up and running at top speed. You would need the operating system disk, the driver disks and software disks that you have.

I paid for a year of norton 360 and I have about 100 days left and I'd hate to let the money I used on it go to waste. You have any reccommendations after I"m done with this for other antivirus if its the reason its slow, my computer that is.

Honestly, next to the AOL stuff (if you could convince him to stop using it) this would be the first thing I would remove. It is very likely taking up a lot of space, a lot of resources. For a computer of this size I would recommend using Avira. It is a great av program, one of the highest ranking of both free and paid AV programs and it doesn't consume a lot of space or resources but offers superb protection. I know you have a bit over 3 months remaining on the Norton subscription but losing that 3 months may very will be worth it if the computer will run better without it, and I believe that it will.

In addition to Norton and AOL another item I see is this LogMeIn using a lot of resources. A legitimate program and maybe there is a reason for it as I don't know what your father does on the computer. LogMeIn is a program which allows one to access and back up a home or work computer from anywhere with an Internet connection. I am not certain why this would be on his computer, do you know?

As I said, you can go through and remove everything he doesn't need or use, get music, pictures and the like off there and onto a CD or flash drive or whatever. Generally "pare down" what is installed and then try speeding things up with defrag or you can simply reformat and reinstall. I will be happy to assist with either one but the choice has to be yours.
You can give me an Uninstall list generated by using HiJackThis if you like and I can go through and see if there are a lot of unnecessary programs on there he can get rid of if you prefer to go that route. To create the uninstall list do the following:
Open HiJackthis.
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into a reply.

With the two anti-virus Programs. I only ran Avira once and removed it immediately. I'm not running two anti-viruses simultaneously. I just ran another one once to see if norton missed anything.

I am currently using high speed internet.

As with AOL he's not using an AOL client. Just merely the email service. We don't have AOL installed on my computer. We use to but we deleted it when we got roadrunner. My dad just kept the email and uses it by going to aol.com through firefox. The email client through firefox shouldn't slow things down should it?

For LogMeIn my dad took his computer to a friend of ours to fix and he installed logmein so whenever we wanted his help he could remotely go through and do sum checkups. I'm pretty knowledgeable with computers and the processes he uses so I'm going to remove logme in.

I think I'm going to try uninstall some things first. Then maybe upgrade the hard drive. If that doesn't work then I'm going to do the reformat that you were talkin about.

Sorry haven't been around for three days, spent Easter with family.
Your idea of removing items is good. As far as actual programs, there aren't an over abundance of programs on there but one or two I am not familiar with, like Dev-C++ 5 beta 9 release (4.9.9.2). I am not familiar with the program itself and since it is a beta version, this means a test version, I don't recommend test versions anyway. But I don't feel all the space is consumed by programs, judging by the list, there has to be a lot more on there taking up space as I noted earlier, pictures, music, I cannot tell but with the programs installed I just don't feel the problem lies with the programs installed. Definitely removing LogMeIn is one thing to do, there really is no reason for this program to be on the computer unless it is used all the time and from what you have told me it is not. Plus it is auto starting with each boot up and then there are no fewer than four processes running all the time in the background: C:\Program Files\LogMeIn\x86\LogMeIn.exe

Totally unnecessary and definitely consuming valuable resources. So removal is a great idea.
A larger hard drive would certainly be one way to go if you are unable to remove enough. Honestly since you are considering that I would begin with a reformat and reload of this drive and see what develops. You may find by removing all the unnecessary items that you will regain a huge amount of space and won't need the larger drive.

Dev-C++ the beta version is what I use to compile programs for c++.
As for the uninstalling your right about the programs. I found some really old music and old files that were from like 5 years ago that were taking up 10 whole gigs of memory. I deleted them all and its running much smoother now. I want to thank you for the advice and if I ever need help reformatting I'll send you an email.
