This seems like a tough virus to get rid of. I have Symantec AntiVirus on my computer, which I update and run everytime I turn on the computer.

However I seem to have picked up a virus despite my precautions. Since late last week, every minute or so, I get the following notification:

Scan type: Realtime Protection Scan
Event: Virus Found!
Virus name: Hacktool.Rootkit
File: C:\Documents and Settings\Amy\msdirectx.sys
Location: Quarantine
Computer: AVGODDESS
User: Amy
Action taken: Clean failed : Quarantine succeeded : Access denied
Date found: Mon Jul 04 13:23:26 2005

I've already tried running different virus scans (to no avail).
I've also tried to locate the file, but I can't seem to find it (even if I'm viewing all hidden folders).

As a last resort, I installed and ran Hijack this. I'm hoping that someone who may have had the same problem could tell me which of these files contains the virus. Here's my list:

Hi,
Please print or save this Webpage.
Make Windows to show all files:-
Go to Start > My Computer.
Go to Tools menu, click Folder Options (Folder Option will be in View Menu in Win98).
Uncheck Hide protected operating system files.
Then, click to select the option Show hidden files and folders.
Click Apply and then click OK to exit.

Download the removal tool f-bot, do not run it now.

Download these Tools and Install them:-
CCleaner
AdAware
TrojanHunter Trial
WebRoot SpySweeper Trial

Reboot in Safe Mode:-
Restart (or switch ON) the PC.
Then, keep tapping the F8 Key.
From the menu that will be displayed, out of which choose Safe Mode and press Enter.

Once in safe mode, double-click on f-bot.exe to run the tool.

After the completion of f-bot tool, run HijackThis and click Do only a System scan.
Then put a check mark infront of below listed entries:-

Close all other open programs except Hijackthis and click the button Fix Checked in HijackThis.

Exit from HijackThis. Delete these files:-
advpsys.exe
winu32.exe
winmon.exe
winusb32.exe
winssv.exe
wuamgrd32de.exe
msn32.exe

Rename these files:-
C:\windows\system32\Media\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Users\OPEN.EXE -- rename this to OPEN_OLD.EXE
C:\windows\system32\Media\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Users\MSTASK.exe -- rename this to MSTASK_OLD.EXE

Run these applications in the following order and remove the bad things they may find.
CCleaner

  • Click "Options" button and here go to "Settings" tab and uncheck the option "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours".
  • Click OK to exit from the Options.
  • Finally click "Run Cleaner".

AdAware

  • Click "Scan Now" button in the left pane.
  • Select the radio button "Perform full system scan".
  • click "Start".

TrojanHunter

  • Select all the Hard Disk partitions.
  • Click "Full Scan".

WebRoot SpySweeper

  • Click "Options" button.
  • Click "Sweep Options" tab, and here select all the Hard Disk Partitions.
  • In the "Where to sweep" option box, select "Sweep all folders on the selected drives".
  • In the "What to sweep" option box, make sure all the items are selected.
  • Then click "Sweep Now" button and click "Start".

Reboot to Normal Mode. Perform an online virus scan at Panda ActiveScan with the "Disinfection" option enabled. Then save the log file it gives.
Run HijackThis again, click Do a System scan and save log, and post the fresh log along with the Panda log.

Thanks so much for the detailed instructions. I think that TrojanHunter found the virus and deleted it...the virus notifications aren't popping up on my screen anymore.

Here's the results from the Panda scan:

Incident Status Location
Virus:Trj/Demfire.C Disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\ins.bat Virus:W32/Sdbot.ftp Disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\o

And here's the results of the latest HijackThis scan:
