If I had seen Adwatch running in the hijackthis log I would have recommended you disable it before fixing anything. Adwatch cannot discriminate between malware attempting to make changes, or you the owner making legitimate changes.
It is not corrupt, just doing it's job :).
Your best bet may be to uninstall it, make the changes with hijackthis, then reinstall Adwatch.

I only suggest uninstalling it if disabling it does not work. When a registry change is attempted (I do not have Adwatch, so correct me if I am wrong), Adwatch should pop up and ask if you want the change to go ahead, yes? There may also be an option to "remember my answer," yes? So, if you tick 'NO' and have it remember the answer, it is possible I think, that Adwatch will apply it across the board. Once the remember my answer is ticked, I don't know if it can be reversed.

3) Find_qoologic - I did not have any of the log files that you mentioned C:\log.txt , C:\win.txt or C:\start.txt.  But there was a log file that was in the folder - file.txt so I included that one.  Let me know if you think I did it incorrectly or need to run it again.

Save all the below files to a text document (notepad) to be used shortly.

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows and hit the "Fix checked" button.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qbet] C:\WINDOWS\qbet.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Io02RRM3V] atrivs.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [kbdsp] C:\WINDOWS\System32\kbdsp.exe

Open the text file you saved previously and right click and drag your cursor over the files to highlight them and then use Control+C to copy them to the clipboard..
Open KILLBOX and go to File...."Paste From Clipboard". All the files should now appear in the box (click on the Tab and check to make sure that only the files I have identified as malware and marked for deletion are there) . Then checkmark the "Delete on Reboot" box..and click the red X. You will get a message saying "File will be deleted on next reboot" , Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" and post a new log when you have rebooted.

Crunchie.......I checked for the files and here's what I found:

1) C:Windows\qbet.exe - NOT present
2) C:Windows\System32\kbdsp.exe - NOT present ...there was kbdsp.dll in sytem32 and system32\dllcache but no .exe file
3) C:Windows\MNRZV.dll - PRESENT

I've been asked in previous posts to delete some files such as these and they've typically not been present or Undeletable even by Killbox so before I continued ('cause it feels like things are getting close) I wanted to get a better handle on why they are not present; it seems like you are seeing something on the logs that says they should be there. Note: I do have the "show system and hidden files" options checked on the views.....but I'll double check anything you ask !! thanks

Those files were shown by the scans you have done already. If you get a error from killbox when killing them, then they likely do not exist.
Before deleting the dll files you found, I would scan them at jotti's.

I scanned the dll files at jotti and they all turn out OK. I followed the directions on the previous post - fixing in HJT and deleting the 3 files via KillBox.... Putting multiple files in KillBox did not seem to work ....but since 2 of the 3 were not on the PC in the first place it didn't seem to matter....I did not do anything with the kbdsp.dll files; should I have? WildTangent did NOT try to load this time! How did it get cleaned ?? :confused:

BTW and more importantly, what's the recommendation to keep this from happening again....I was running AdAware pretty regulary as well as the proactive AdWatch.....and I have Norton Systemworks.......should I add more ?? will they conflict with each other? What about going to another browser altogether? These past 2 months have been a PITA that I don't want to relive ....thanks

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

Crunchie......it looks like the pop-ups have stopped....thanks for all the help!....I'll be using your suggestions moving forward on how to prevent it from happening again - first is getting off IE !! One item is still occuring, though, and I wanted to see what you thought.....it's WildTanget.....I'm getting an error again when the PC starts up...here it is:

"Error loading C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine 0400.dll The specified module could not be loaded"

This error was not occuring after the final clean-up for a few reboots......but now it's back. I did a search for Wild Tanget on the drives and nothing shows up. I removed the program via Add/Remove several posts ago. The only other thing that just popped in my head was that I didn't flush the restore points at first and I'm not sure whether or not this error start again after I did that or not??

How can I stop this from happening? I've included a HJT.

Crunchie....most of the files you asked me to delete were not present....and two of the HJT entries were not present, as well....I copied your instructions and detailed what was there in CAPS.....a new HJT scan is below....the "WildTanget" error did not occur when I rebooted this time......but where is it coming from? Crunchie....I was doing some "snooping" around on my own and I think I found something........when I load Lavasoft's Ad-Watch module (are you familiar?), I get see changes to the registry taking place.....I looked into the logs and saw the changes being made for WildTangent, qbet, kdsp.exe etc - all of the stuff you had me "fix" in HJT and the same ones I do a search for to delete on the hard drive but cannot ever find....I tested it by loading Ad Watch after the good HJT scan, saw the registry changes taking place, rebooted and got that WildTangent error I was complaining about....I did another HJT scan and saw the same ones you had me "fix" before.. ....so I unload Ad Watch, did the fix on the registry with HJT and rebooted - no WildTangent error and a clean HJT .....is it possible that the LavaSoft programs are corrupt? :eek: Are there any of those log files that you'd like to see? thanks

So is AdWatch seeing that a change was made and then changing it back ? .....your suggesting to unistall (not disable) Ad Watch and then reinstall it .....any time I'd need to change the registry I'd have to do a new install of Ad Watch basically ?? ...seems like I was causing my own problems for 2 months ! :o

Hi Crunchie.....did some inestigating.....it's weird, but here's what I am seeing.....I disable Ad-Watch and then run the fix using HJT to get rid of the registry entries for Wildtangent, etc and then reboot (with Ad Watch still disabled) and things look fine....however, as soon as I enable Ad-Watch, those changes that I made seem to come back - the event log screen for Ad-Watch shows various changes to the registry - it does not ask me if they are "ok" it just reports that they are made.....I've copied the log file below for you to see as well as the HJT scan that I ran right afterwards.....is my cope of Ad-Watch somehow corrupt or am I not using the app correctly?.....I did not try to unistall the software and re-install - should I ? thanks for the help
