I restarted my computer and bootup to desktop was extremely slow...it took about 5 minutes to display. I received a Microsoft C++ Runtime error message with the following path.

Program:...es\common files\RoxioShared\9.0\SharedCom\RoxWatch9.exe

I thought that it may be associated with RealPlayer SP that I downloaded about a month ago so I deleted the common file and moved it to the trash bin. After another restart, once again it booted extremely slow but this time without the error message. Any task or program that I attempt to execute also takes bout 5 minutes to open. I downloaded HijackThis and is posted below. I don't know if I have a virus, trojan or spyware but I really need my pc for my small business. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

I cannot see anything bad there. As soon as the machine has booted, take a look in Task Manager and see what is using the cpu (if anything).

Turn off Windows automatic update and set it to notify you of updates instead.

Download OTL to your Desktop.

* Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
* Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
/md5start
eventlog.dll
scecli.dll
netlogon.dll
cngaudit.dll
sceclt.dll
ntelogon.dll

nvstor32.sys
/md5stop
%systemroot%\*. /mp /s
%systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
%systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
CREATERESTOREPOINT

* Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them back here.

Thanks Crunchie,
Here are the scan results. I checked task manager. No heavy cpu usage. A lot of svchost entries, 8 to be exact but cpu usage ranged from 3 to 10%. Once an applicaton is opened, everything moves smoothly. Just opening, closing and bootup takes forever.

Try setting Windows update to 'notify when an update is available,' rather than automatic.
When was the last time you de-fragged the hard drive?

It's been a couple of years since I did a defrag. I'll try it tonight. I'll set Windows update to notify also. When I tried a system restore, it only showed restore points for this month and wouldn't allow me to click back to March. Don't know if that helps anything...just throwing it out there. Thanks again.

With the system restore, it all depends on the space allocated for it. If there is not enough, it will just over-write the older saves.
If it has been a couple of years since the last de-frag, this one may take a while. Maybe do it over night :).

An analysis of the hard drive revealed that the hard drive didn't need to be defragged but I went ahead and defragged anyway. Problem still exists. Also, when I tried to change auto update to notify, when I clicked on the automatic updates tab, it wouldn't open. I'm at my wit's end on this one. Do you think that it's time to use more drastic measures like reinstalling XP? I'm not very familiar with that process and I need to back up important files and programs. I would need a little help with that.

I forgot some information that also may help. When this problem first started I was getting fatal errors from Spy Sweeper and it said that I had to reinstall the software. Since it had expired anyway I didn't bother to reinstall it. Also, When I tried to launch MS Word or open a word doc, I'd get the Windows Installer box stating "preparing to install" followed by "an error occured and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Please run setup and select repair...to restore this application". I did a restart and that's when I received the message:
Runtime error
Program:...es\common files\RoxioShared\9.0\SharedCom\RoxWatch9.exe

That's when all of the problems started. Hope this helps.

Lets not resort to anything too drastic yet :). May have to, but can still try a couple of things.

Please use the Internet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.

I received a Java plug in fatal error while trying to download it. Several Java virtual machines are running in the same process caused an error. What exactly does that mean? I'll continue trying.

I will. Still scanning folders and will scan files afterwards. Several infected items were discovered during the "my computer" scan. Will post after all locations have been scanned.

Post up the results when finished.

Sorry for the delay. Saved it in the wrong format the first time.

I did a search on the file 4mr6ts1o.exe and the only results I received was located in Windows Prefetch folder. I uploaded it for scan and nothing was found on all scans. I also uninstalled Frostwire although the infected file was not one of the items uninstalled. I will do a separate search for it. The remote administrator seems to be part of the UBCD utility software that I installed. I uninstalled UBCD and will search for the remote administrator file to see if it was removed also. I will send you the Gmer scan results in next post.

Please go to Jotti's or to virustotal and have this file scanned. Post the results back here.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\tifm21.sys

Jotti scan results: 0 out of 20 scanners found nothing.

Confusing answer. Zero found nothing, so what did the 20 find?

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Physically disconnect from the internet.
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Run Combofix ONCE only!!

When a computer starts extremely slow, but has no apparent malware running, I'd first check the speed of the hard disk: Go to Device Manager and open the IDE ATA/ATAPI drivers section. Look at the Advanced tab at Options for each Primary IDE channel. If you find it saying "PIO only", that's the problem. For a modern hard disk it should read UltraDMA5 or 6, for an optical drive UDMA2.

The repair is quite easy: Just delete the IDE channel in question, reboot, let windows find and install the channel and all the drives attached to it, reboot again when asked. If the disk is intact, this will fix the speed issues. It wouldn't harm to check the disk's condition with a manufacturer diagnostic program, though, of course only after backing up all personal data.

Thank you for the information Bizman. I checked and device 0 is PIO only. Would just changing the channel to DMA if available, which is populated in the drop down box, fix or have any effect on the problem? I have 2 devices listed. The other says DMA if available. By deleting the channel, do I stand a chance of not being able to boot up at all? Just curious since this computer is vital to my business and can't chance it being totally inoperable.
