Did I miss anything???

Smokem

I think I got it, I even managed to gt my background to change.

Thanks anyways

But trust me I will be back nice site

Smokem

Good work on your part- your latest log is very clean. :)

Are you still seeing any symptoms of infections? If so, give us some specific info on that.

Well as of last night, or 5 1/2 hours after the fight began, there were no residual signs of this nasty little thing. What bugs me the most is I was running and AV and scanning with Adaware on a regular basis. These are all thin I recommend to clients, and yet it still got through.

Any good suggestions on how to detect this stuff before it hits?

I was wrong, my fiancee turned on the computer and after about 20 minutes in her profile it's back. It has to be something that resides in her files, but I thought I had deleted them all.

Help, any suggestions?

Log on to her account, scan with hijackthis, and post the log please.

I would also suggest removing Viewpoint Manager (using Add/Remove Programs), and then go to C:\Program Files and delete the Viewpoint folder.

Will do but won't be till tonight, unless of course I can talk her through the process, I figured that in safemode everything should have been cleared guess that was a bad thought.

Ok well after fighting with this thing (tough to do when your internet is down) I think I have rid myself of it.

I have run 6 different spyware programs, and all have found something different, but it was Microsofts Antispyware that killed it finally.

But she still can't get her desktop back... any suggestions...

Smokem

You said "can't get her desktop back"; can you give us specific information on just what you mean by that please?

These are all thin I recommend to clients, and yet it still got through.

The Nasties have gotten nastier, so the rules have changed. The old recommendations of Ad Aware, SpyBot, and a good A-V programs (which I used to recommend to my clients as well) just don't do the trick anymore in terms of keeping a system most protected. Ad Aware and SpyBot are still good tools to have thaough.

For the best protection against the most current threats, these are my general recommendations:

This should go without saying, but:

Enable Windows Automatic Update function to keep your system as up-to-date as possible with the most current Microsoft security and bug fixes.

In addition:

1. Detection and removal tools:

ewido Security Suite - http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Microsoft Anti-Spyware beta - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en
Ad Aware SE Personal - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
SpyBot Search & Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/

Use each program's online update function before running them to make sure you have the most current updates installed, and run the programs consecutively (the order doesn't really matter). After each utility completes its fixes, reboot before continuing on to the next utility; have the utilities fix all of the problematic/malicious items they find.

2. Online anti-virus/anti-spyware scanners (have your clients run at least three of these):

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9914
http://www.pandasoftware.com/active...n_principal.htm
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

3. Install preventative utilities such as SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard (links are in my sig below), especially if you absolutely have to continue using Internet Exploder. These utilities protect areas of your system known to be vulnerable to malicious attacks. IE-SPYAD is another helpful tool; it can be downloaded here:
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

4. Tighten up some of Internet Explorer's existing, default settings to make it more secure. Some info on that can be found here: http://tomcoyote.org/ieoe.php

5. Install a stand-alone firewall program such as Zone Alarm, Sygate Personal Firewall, or Kerio Personal Firewall, or purchase the "Internet Security" packages offered by Symantec and McAfee.

6. None of your utilities are of much good if you don't check for updates frequently; updates for anti-spyware/anti-virus programs can be released as often as every two or three days.

And of course, the general cleaning of areas where viruses and "spyware" tend to hide:

Reboot into safe mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up)

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (but not the folders themselves):

Important: One of the normal steps in eliminating malicious programs is to entirely delete the contents of all Temp folders. Given that, if any data that you care about is living in those Temp folders, you need to move it to a safe location now, or it will be erased along with everything else!

1. Cookies
2. Local Settings\Temp
3. Local Settings\History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.

I have done all that, I went in and ran everything in the 4 accounts that showup in Safemode that includes the admin account. I found one that was hiding in the Current User registry...

What I am having trouble with is resetting the desktop background in my fiancee's profile, I had cleaned Spy Sherriff off mine, no problem but when she logged into hers, it came back full force. I cleaned it again, my background is fine but hers will not be changed at all. Something is holding on to it fiercely.

Here is her HJT this log...

It's to the point she won't go into her's for fear of it starting all over again. I'm ready to blow away her account and redo it. I have fought some nasties before but this is by far the worst.

Smokem

Cool as soon as I get home I will do it.

Crossing my fingers. IS it just me or are they getting smarter?

One day mark my words the machines will be in control!!

Smokem

... or are they getting smarter?

Absolutely.

Evening all, well I tried that and it didn't work. I didn't create a restore point as system restore is currently disabled and I am still hesitant to turn it back on...

I am at the point of just redoing her profile after backing up her data...

Go to Run --> regedit

Then go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Look for the entries NoDispAppearancePage and NoDispBackgroundPage. If they have 1 as their values, set them to 0.

To update I can now set her background to change it just won't change it after I click apply. I just stays Blue... At least I am making progress.

I will try this though and see if it corrects the problem...

Thanks for all the help... I think I got it squashed.
