Hello,

First I would like to say I'm new here and from what I've read on some of the threads seems like a very useful place for information.

My problem: I was playing warcraft 3 single player minding my own business sound was working fine, everything was cool till my screen froze. Tried alt f4ing tried alt tabbing out, tried ctrl alt dlt, none of that worked and that's all I know, so I just turned it off using the power button. When I turned it back on it did its little windows checkdisc thing and when it finished and came back up the sound icon was gone. I test sound it doesn't work. I'm not even getting sounds from error messages. I go into control panel to sounds and devices and everything seems fine, my device is there volume notch is up. The only thing is when I try to check the box "Place volume icon in the taskbar" it says Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the volume control program has not been installed. To install it, use add/remove programs in control panel.

So I clicked on the add/remove programs, nothing was listed, I went to the add/remove windows components tab, there was no sound option, so went back clicked the add new programs tab, clicked windows update. Opened IE to the windows updater thing (I never use IE I usually use firefox but it forced me to use IE) it said I apparently had 74 updates, including a hardware one, I ran the updater and it prompted me to restart. When I restarted this Anti Virus thing that I didn't have before said my computers at risk and automatically popped up and "started a scan" and kept popping up errors, I hit ctrl alt dlt to see if I could cut it, but it said tsk mgnr can't launch cause it's infected, so I turned the computer off again using the power button, turned it back on and it ran the check disc again, this time when it started it said something about a registry had been recovered and this time the Anti Virus thing popped up but this time I hit the X quick and closed it and everything seemed okay, but again sound is completely gone.

Then I also noticed another thing, I pulled up my computer and my cd drives are gone as well. Can anyone help me? I'm currently running the "cleaning" methods in the "please read before posting" but even if it finds and gets ride of any virus's I may of picked up will that fix my sound problem as well? also my cd drives?

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

* DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.

Reboot the computer->VERY IMPORTANT.
Come back here and post the MBA-M log.

You may need to download RKill as well if it won't let you run MalwareBytes. Follow instructions on my blog I recently had an issue similiar & blogged on it.

n0pz, if rkill IS needed I will give instructions for it, for the moment let us wait and see what ssj4tim is able to accomplish.

ssj4tim please attempt the step as I have given it. If you are unable to complete the instructions then please post back and I will give you an alternate method of accessing the program.

Ok, there may be more infection on there so lets check all that out first then work on missing devices, ok?
Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and attach the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

* You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
* You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
* Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
* When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.

hmm, wouldn't let me edit my post a second time, but I was curious and not sure if this matters, I used my brother's plug in and play headset to test, and when I plug that in the sound works, it's just the speakers that don't work and the sound still won't let me place volume icon in the taskbar giving me an error, and under devices my CD drive is listed, it's just not listed under my computer, and CD's don't play when I put them in.

First I would like you to do a system scan, save the log and post it here.
Also do an Uninstall list with Hijackthis also.
To do this follow these steps:
Start HijackThis
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into a reply also.

I'm posting from my phone I did the fix checked on those then rebooted, once my desktop came up after only a couple seconds it goes to a blue screen saying " w problem had been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. IRQL_not_less_or_equal" tells me to check my software and hardware for Windows updates, then towards the bottom says *** stop: 0x0000000A (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x804FF8F8)

None of those removals should have caused this error but it can be caused by out of date software or hardware. Your computer is way out of date. SP3 has been out for well over two years and support for XP SP2 ended yesterday. Microsoft .NET Framework is now up to version 3.5 SP1, your Java is out of date it is currently at version 6 update 21.
You might try this:
To start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, follow these steps:

1. Start your computer.
2. tap the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu.
3. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
4. If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.
See if this allows you to boot up.

You need to wait to do the updates until we are certain the computer is clean. That is one of the main requirements.
You are going to need to do those two scans again.
Update MBA-M and run the full scan again, be sure to remove everything found. Reboot and then do the ESET scan again, also remove everything found.
Then do a new HJT scan.
Post back with those three logs.

It looks much better. I am going to recommend that you change anti-virus program. AVG just isn't one of the higher ranked programs these days and as you have seen it offered you very little protection. Plus today I have helped with at least nine infected computers and six of them were running AVG 9, what does that tell you.
I strongly recommend that you remove it, via Add/Remove of course and then install an excellent FREE antivirus program. There are two I would recommend, either Avira Free, found here http://download.cnet.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html?part=dl-10322935&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=11012914

or Avast Free found here; http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?part=dl-85737&subj=dl&tag=button

Both have very high rankings. I personally use Avira and have used it for at least two years, I am very pleased with it.
The choice is yours of course. But choose one and get rid of the AVG.
After you have done that, of course run a full scan with your new program. Have it clean or quarantine anything found.

Once that is complete then you also need to update your Java program as it is out of date.
Go Here and download the Offline Install file, save it to your desktop for easy access. http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Then close all browsers, go to Add/Remove and Uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 18.
Once the uninstall is complete then double click that install file on the desktop to install the new version. Be sure to watch the install carefully, it will only take a few moments. But these install files now often contain extra toolbars, and you DON'T need those so when or if you see one of these listed, simply remove the check mark next to it and continue with the Java install. You won't get that tool bar with it if you remove the check mark.
Once the install is complete then go back to the download page and click Verify Now to go to the verification page to assure the install went as planned.

After that, reboot and run a new HJT scan. Post back here with the log.

Well, my disc drives still don't show up under my computer and don't respond when I put a cd in and sound only works through a USB headset but the speakers don't work and when I go into control panel and try to place the volume icon in the taskbar, says "Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the volume control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove programs in control panel, I only know how to use that to remove programs I don't know how to add the volume control.

well I ran a trouble shooter for the CD drives from the microsoft support page and it worked they are working again, I ran a similar one for audio but it asks me to change the default devices, and when ever I try to change something on the window it pops up it says "Windows Cannot execute SndVol32.exe", use add/remove programs control panel to install. Everything I've found by searching this error online tells me to extract some file from the Windows CD, however I don't have my windows CD. My computer was built by my brother and he never gave me cd's, is there any way around that?

Right Click My Computer. Choose Properties. When that opens choose Hardware, Device Manager. When that opens go to the Sound, Video, Game Controllers and click the check mark. You should see your sound card in there and the manufacturer. Double click to open and you should be able to see the driver version installed. Then go to the mfg. website to see if there are newer drivers, download and install if there are new ones. Pick the newest one.

FANTASTIC job by the way tracking down and fixing the cd drives. Bravo!

I got it working now, everything seems to be working properly. I've started running windows updates, including service pack 3, I assume that's the last thing I need to do.

I'm having the same "hidden" IE windows and wav sound being "muted". I ditched AVG and installed Avast. Ran both Avast and MalWB, nothing found. Also ran ESET offline, it found 3 Unruy.CB variant files and removed then. No results. Here is my HJ log:
