Hi. I have no idea as to what might have caused this, but suddenly windows xp doesnt seem to recognize anything, from .lnk files to .exe to .bat. I can open documents and images but no programs. After a while i managed to get Hijackthis running.
Here's the log. Thanks in advance

Hi battousai, welcome to TechTalk :)

You are running a very old version of HijackThis; you need to get the most current version (1.99.1) and post the log that that version generates. You can get the latest version of HijackThis here.

Hello and Thanks!

Oops... sorry about that... here's the new one

Also, some aditional information, whenever i restart my pc, all the .lnk, exe, com, bat, etc... become useless, and i get a window asking me wether to search the web for an apropriate application or choose the program from a list (i'm sure you know what i'm talking about).
I can sometimes fix the problem by going to "Tools>Folder options>File Types" in windows explorer and adding the .exe entry there. But sometimes that doesnt work either...
Anyway, here's the log:

Please do the following:

You will need to close all web browser programs before performing these procedures, so you should print out the following instructions or save them into a text file with Notepad.

1. Click on the "Run..." option under your Start menu, type the following in the resulting "Open:" box, and then hit Enter:

services.msc

In the resulting list of Windows Services, locate the following services and perform the procedure below for each:

NTBOOTMGR (NTBOOT)
NTLOAD
NTSVCMGR

- Double-click on the service.
- In the resulting window, click the Stop button if the service is reported to be currently running.
- Once the service is stopped, choose the "Disabled" option in the "Startup Type" drop-down menu, and then click OK.

Close the Services window after reconfiguring all three of the services.

2. Run HijackThis again and have it fix:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O23 - Service: NTBOOTMGR (NTBOOT) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe
O23 - Service: NTLOAD - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntsrv.exe
O23 - Service: NTSVCMGR - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntsrv.exe

3. Once HJT finishes the fix, click on the "Config" button in the lower right corner of HijackThis' main window. In the next window, click on the "Misc Tools" button at the top then click the "Delete an NT service" button. Type the following in the box and click OK:

NTBOOTMGR

- Repeat the above procedure for NTLOAD and NTSVCMGR

4. Reboot into Safe Mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up).

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- Locate and delete the following files (be very careful when deleting the first two files; there are legitimate files named csrss.exe and services.exe in the C:\Windows\System32 folder!):

C:\WINDOWS\system\driver\csrss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system\driver\services.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntuser.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DRIVER\ntsrv.exe

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (but not the folders themselves):

Important: One of the normal steps in eliminating malicious programs is to entirely delete the contents of all Temp folders. Given that, if any data that you care about is living in those Temp folders, you need to move it to a safe location now, or it will be erased along with everything else!

1. Cookies
2. Local Settings\Temp
3. Local Settings\History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

5. Reboot normally, run HijackThis again, and post the new log.

Thanks a lot for that. Everything rebooted normally after following your instructions

Here's the new log:

Good work- your log looks clean now. :)

Everything rebooted normally after following your instructions

Does that mean that all of your programs, shortcuts, etc. are working now? Please give us an update on that.

I really cant thank you enough.

Yes, everything is working fine. All the shortcuts where restored (they had that unknown file icon), and windows now recognizes program files again, without me needing to do that "Tools>Folder Options" thing.

Thanks a lot :D

You're welcome, glad we could help (we like happy endings). :)

Now that your log is clean and your system appears to be functioning correctly, please read this thread for some very good suggestions on how to make your computer much less prone to future infections.
