I did find another thread on this topic, but it didn't fully fit my issue. I would appreciate any help in resolving this issue, which is as follows:

I have McAfee Virus Plus and I suddenly began to get notifications from the program that there was no virus protection. When I clicked "Fix Now" it took me to the McAfee page for an upgrade. I paid for the highest protection they had, downloaded it, and it still is notifying me that there's no virus protection. Windows Defender also gave me a warning that there was no virus protection. I ran the Windows Defender again and the red flag finally went away--but McAfee still insists there's no virus protection.

I've downloaded and have run all of the programs suggested in "Read Me Before Posting a Request for Assistance," but in doing so, "Hijack this" told me that "For some reason your system denied access to the host file." It then said I would need to edit the file myself. :( Not sure how to do that, but I followed the next instructions which said to click Start, run and type: notepad C:\windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.

I did this, and here's what came up:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

____________

I have not done anything with this file yet because I'm not sure what to do from here.

In a few minutes I will post all the results I had from following the initial "Read Me Before Posting" instructions--I just need to get them in order first.

I would appreciate any help in getting rid of whatever is interfering with my antivirus software.

Many thanks!
Gina

I just went into Windows Action Center to see what virus protection it has detected since I'm not getting security messages. I discovered that messaging about virus detection has been turned off. I turned it back on, and now my security flag on my taskbar has a red x. So virus protection on my computer has either been deleted or neither McAfee nor Windows can find it.

Hi, Your Hosts file is locked so that no malware can simply modify it [okay, without removing the "protection" first, a simple thing to achieve...]- it's entries are fine.
If you had McAfee Virus Plus, you certainly do not now.
You have McAfee Security Scan, but that only informs you as to the state of your protection services.
You could run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe) to clean your computer of remnants and then attempt a reinstallation of the service you purchsed, but first read this page [a guide to removal]:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
Good luck.

Thanks! That's exactly what a friend did for me, I think. Thanks, it's fixed now.

I take that back. A week later, my Mcafee Virus protection has once again been removed and my Windows Defender turned off again. I turned on Defender, downloaded McAfee again, and temporarily it's on, but obviously there's something still there. Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

Hi, Gina,
There are cases of Mcafee and Defender not sitting well together; because you have MBAM [a better thing] as a service you should remove Defender completely.
Having said that, i have not heard of a malware actually uninstalling a protection service, and i wonder if the problem is not something to do with your shadowing service?
These four files intrigue me; a search does not show what they could be related to, and in any event I am not sure the SysWow64 folder is the place for temp files...
C:\windows\SysWow64\sho7905.tmp, shoF1F1.tmp, sho2AFC.tmp, sho145F.tmp
You could submit some or all to http://virusscan.jotti.org/, click Choose and submit the file for examination [the Choose button browses to the file]
If they exist still, check their properties/owner. Being temp files, it should be safe to delete them. Are there now any other similarly named .tmp files?

Hello, and thanks for responding! I ran those temp files through the virus scan as you suggested, and there was nothing found. Most of them were 0 bytes so that's a little odd. But I guess that's even more reason to delete them. We've now also removed McAfee completely and replaced it with Sophos, so I'm going to give it a week or two to see whether that solves the problem, since you point out that McAfee and Defender are known to have compatibility issues.

If it doesn't solve the problem, I'll be back. :)

Windows Defender is really not that good of a program. I would keep it disabled entirely. It does interfere with other programs, much better programs.
