I use Windows ME and Internet Explorer 6.0

I have a couple of problems. First, usually when I run the list of active applications (ctrl+alt+delete), "Explorer" would always be the first thing on the list, but now it's gone when I start up the computer.

Second problem is that I cannot run Spyware Doctor, when I try to I get an error message saying, "Error while unpacking program, code 4. Please report to author." And when I tried to uninstall and reinstall it, same problem.

A third problem which seemed to have disappeared now is when I did a google search of any kind, then I click on one of the results to go to that web page, it would automatically redirect it to some different pages each time I clicked on a search result. But as I mentioned that problem has gone away.

I checked my list of start-up programs (through the Starter program), and I did a scan with HiJackThis, and I didn't find anything suspicious. Do you know what's happening and how I can fix it?

Please post your HJT log, maybe we will see somthing you missed :).

Though it has gone away, this can be a sign of a browser hijacker.

Hmm, did ya happen to run this in Safe Mode?

1 more thing. Be sure all programs are enabled on startup (do this through the 'msconfig' utility).

Then, restart, and post back here with a log from normal mode.

Thanks again.

Hmm, log looks clean.

May want to try to download it from a different place.

EDIT: J beat me, good point about safe mode. Also re-enable anything you stopped form running on startup. Then post a new log.

I'm just gonna say this. You're INFESTED :) But, we can fix everything, so no worries.

Let's begin by uninstalling any of the following via the Add/Remove Programs list:

RL07UWTK
TOOLBAR
TBPS
WinTools
zango

Step 1.
==========

- Please download DSRFix from here
- Extract\unzip the files to your Desktop
(Note: Do NOT run this yet)

Step 2.
==========

Please download Ewido Security Suite from here. It is a free version of the program.

  1. Install ewido security suite
  2. When installing the program, under "Additonal Options" uncheck...
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  3. Launch ewido, there should now be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  4. The program will now open to the main screen.
  5. When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  6. You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files:
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  8. Close Ewido Security Suite

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Step 3.
==========

- Please download Ad-Aware SE Personal from here
- Install it and check for updates
- Close Ad-Aware

Step 4.
==========

- Download Ad-Aware's VX2 Cleaner plugin from here
- Make sure Ad-Aware SE Personal is closed then install the VX2 Cleaner
- Start Ad-Aware SE Personal
- Click Add-Ons
- Double-click VX2 Cleaner
- Click OK to start the cleaner tool
- If nothing is found click OK and exit the program.

or

- If malware is found click Clean System
- When it's done click Start in Ad-Aware SE Personal
- Make sure Perform smart system scan is checked\selected
- Click Next
- Let it clean anything it finds

- Close program

Step 5.
==========

- Open the DSRFix folder on your Desktop
- Double click dsrfix.bat to run the program (Note: A DOS window should open and close quickly, this is normal)
- Once the fix has completed the tool will close on its own.

Step 6.
==========

- Close all Windows and Programs
- Start HijackThis...
- Select\check the following entries, Double-check to make sure that only these entries are checked.

Heh, so it looks like he did disable some stuff from running on startup and/or ran it in safe mode ;).

PROBLEM!

"Please download Ewido Security Suite from here. It is a free version of the program."

I cannot install it because it "requires Windows 2000 or better."

Also, I wasn't running it in safe mode, only in normal mode.

Hmm alrite. Let's try running the same fix without the Ewido.

T- ya, I just realized, windows ME O23 and such don't register with HJT.

Thanks.
