Good morning! I hope someone can help me with this. My sister sent me an AOL AIM virus and in my attempts to google a fix for it I think I made the problem worse! I believe it also installed Surf Sidekick and Web Nexus - I think I made the mistake of removing Surf Sidekick via the Control Panel but then wisened up and saw that I should get help on the Web Nexus and any "leftovers" Surf Sidekick may have installed on my pc. Can you please help me?

I was trying to use thread 41645 as my reference point, but I also see two other files in my C: drive and when I google them they're identified as viruses too. There's a file that popped up in that file today with a modified day 1 minute before the executable showed up: sysdrv.bat. Does that need to be touched? Can you please help me make sure I've done everything I need to? I would be very greatful! I've been fortunate that I've never had a problem like this until know, but I feel like it's REALLY broken. I'm tired of guessing, frustrated and know my situation doesn't exactly match what I've read in other threads, so I'm going to see if you can help me where I've left off from reading other threads.

Other questionable file:
C:\Trelew.exe

I've run all these programs in safe mode in this order and they came up with pretty much the same adwares and said they removed one or another, but the next one I would run would sometimes find it again, so is it really gone?
1. CCleaner
2. Ad-Aware
3. Spybot
4. Ewido - I ran this twice and on the second run about 15 files were quarantined. do I need to go ahead and delete all the files they quarantine or is it good enough that they are quarantined?
5. Spysweeper - could not download free version for some reason but it found 6 adware issues:
a. 180search assistant/zango
b. clkoptimizer
c. look2me
d. purityscan
e. command
f. targetsaver

Here is my HJT log. Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi and welcome to Daniweb forums :).

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop. (rightclick on this link and choose save as, if using IE save target as)

  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
  • Download qoofix.bat (rightclick on this link and choose save as, if using IE save target as)
  • Place qoofix.bat in your C:\BFU - folder. (Important!)
  • Doubleclick qooFix.bat, Close all browsers and explorer folders.
  • Choose option 1 (Qoolfix autofix) and follow the prompts.
  • Please be patient, it will take about five minutes.
  • Reboot

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download SideKickFix by LonnyRJones.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU)

Please close ALL other open windows & explorer folder's, then double-click on sidekickFix.bat
Click YES and follow the prompts, when prompted to restart the PC please do so.

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

===============

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ewido anti-malware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

If you have any more problems, post back.
