Help with a Hacktool?

Hello, all. I'm wondering if someone would care to help me with what Norton Antivirus deems to be a Hacktool in my C:\WINDOWS\Temp\TempD5.tmp folder.

I'm running MS Windows XP Media Center Edition on an HP AMD Athlong 64 X2

When NAV intitially detected it, the alert window popped up, stating that the offending program had been automatically deleted. Good, I thought, and clicked the OK button. However, every time I did this, the alert window would reappear with the exact same message. I then went to the Reports section of NAV and tried to manually delete the file, which didn't work. My pc then became very sluggish and eventually froze.

Several reboots only led to the same outcome. I then went into safe mode and used the virus program again, which this time didn't detect the Hacktool. So I then did something drastic and recovered my pc by reinstalling Windows from my HP recovery partition. Unfortunately, unlike the one other time I did this, it said that my pc would be returned to its default state except for "DATA FILES that I had added"--strange. The first time I did this, everything was wiped clean and my pc was returned to the state in which I bought it.

Anyway, after getting Windows back to a managable state, which wasn't very time consuming since the recovery program strangely preserved most of the programs I initially had minus NAV, my pc runs fine--although I don't have an antivirus program. I then did an online NAV check, which detected the same Hacktool mentioned above. However, I'm aprehensive about reinstalling NAV (even though it's paid for) as I'm sure the same behavior will occur. I also tried two other online virus checks, Panda and PC Cilin but both of these only caught some spyware, no Hacktool.

turn off IE and rescan. I know it seems like a hassle to rescan but someone was gonna tell you anyways and it could help reveal the problem.

Thank you very much for your response, but I'm afraid I don't quite understand. Turn off Internet Explorer? Do you mean that I should use a different browser for the online scan? If so, it seems that the online scans I mentioned are only compatable with IE. And even if I did want to 'turn it off,' what would that entail? Stopping the process in task manager? Sorry, I'm confirming my own ignorance here. Your patience will be much appreciated.

No you posted a hijack this log which to get good results on you cant get have a browser running. so run w/e online scans and software scans, shut off IE or w/e and then do a hijackthis log.

hi guys,

ehtray is a process usually online found on windows media pc's, it's supposed to give you easy access to the media manager,
ARPWRMSG.exe is also a aplication that was made by microsoft, and belongs to the ARpower message application by microsoft. this is a hidden program, the only way i know of finding it is via the registry - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

have you tried using windows defender btw? its free from www.microsoft.com/downloads , very powerful searc tool for finding stuff like spyware , viruses etc.

there are also programs such as adware which is for free and spybot search and destroy is free as well. you can download both of them on www.download.com and just search for both of them. run a complete pc scan for both and see if that fixes your problem.
