Hi, I am having a problem with my customizing my computer's background.

You see, I can not use pictures as wallpapers for my computers background.

Also, under display properties, under the desktop tab, the background section is colored gray and I can not click on any of them!

I have already ran anti-virus software and anti-spy software, however nothing seems to solve the problem!

Any help on this would be great! Thank you and please help me...... and my computer!

Hello Gomba, welcome to Daniweb Spyware/virus Removal Forums :)

Please Download HJTsetup.exe

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.

Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Okay, I'll do that.......

Hey there :)

Hi rh7684, Welcome to Bleepingcomputer.

I see you have Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

This will change from what we know in 2006 read This Article.

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player

Post back with a fresh HJT logfile.

Alright then, I removed those viewpoint things, here is the new log thing......

I Can see that you are using several Antivirus softwares at the same time..

The main rule is, that only one Antivirus software running on yuor system active.

Which one of these are you currently using active in your system : CAISAFE, Symantec, Or Yahoo Antivirus?

Let me know which one you are currenlty using.

Please Go to Start => Control Panel => Add Or Remove Programs and Remove Those Other Antivirus Softwares and only leave 1 of them installed.

Thanks :)

Alright, I deleted two of them and left only one, should I do another one of those log things?

By the way, I do not know if it particularly matters or not but my computer has been randomly freezing.

Also, this message-error-thing has been popping up lately it reads something like this....

CwndSessionMonitor: iexplore.exe - Application Error [X]

(big x) The instuction at "0x62304390" referenced memory at "0x62304390". The memory could not be "read'.

click OK to terminate the program

[ OK ]

Though, I do not know if any of these things are related to my initial problem.

By the way, thank you for devoting time to help me, I really appreciate it.

Hello?

Are you still there?

I guess i'll take over Rahina must be busy or something. Ok i'm gonna have you run a quick scan.

Please download and install ewido anti-spyware tool(Now called AVG anti-spyware)

  • Close all other Applications Select language click Ok
  • Click I Agree
  • Click next
  • Click Install
  • Click Finish
  • Wait Ewido will open main screen automatically.
  • Wait again a few minutes and Ewido Should Auto update itself. If it doesn't click update at top of screen.
  • This in very important to get updates
  • When updating has finished. Close Ewido.

If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

  • Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear use arrow up to highlight
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.
  • For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: HERE

You MUST manage to get into Safe Mode for the fix to work.

Make sure to close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!

  • Open Ewido
  • Click on scanner top of Ewido sceen
  • Click on Settings
  • Under How to Act click on Recommended Action choose Quarantine
  • Under How to scan all boxes should be selected
  • Under Possibly unwanted software all boxes should be selected
  • On right side under Reports: click on Automatically generate report after every scan.
  • Under What to scan select scan every file
  • Click On scan Tab
  • Click on Complete system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine It can take awhile give it time.
  • When scan has finished At bottom of screen click Apply all Actions
  • Click Save report
  • Click Save Report as (Save as window's screen should pop up.)
  • Click desktop
  • Click Save
  • Exit ewido

Reboot back to normal mode

Now in your next post include the AVG log as well as a new HJT log. Sorry for the delay.

Thank you Kyle, I was out of town and came home today.

Hey thanks!

I am extremely busy today so I do not think I will get the two logs up today. However, I WILL get the logs up tommorow, for sure.

Thanks to the both of you guys for your time!

Thank you Kyle, I was out of town and came home today.

No problem, glad to see you are back.

Good, How are things running now?

Right now everything is alright, everthing is running at a good speed but I still have a couple problems.

First off, my image on my desktop has returned, but I can not change the wallpaper to anything else. Which is not a big problem for me, but is a problem for some other people I that I am living with....

Secondly, I do not know if I should be troubled by all the random freezes, it is also a tad bit annoying when your in the middle of something and everything starts running slow or completely stops.

And the last thing I am unsure of is all the anti-spyware/adware/virus stuff I now have on my computer. Which things should I keep and which ones should I remove. Should I keep AVG Anti-virus or should I keep SBC Yahoo! Online Protection? Which one is more efficient? I have also heard of one called mcafee or something like that and my friend has said to get SpyBot.

I know this all sounds sort of like a giant rant but it is just recently I am getting the feeling that my computer is going to kick the ol' bucket. The computer is relatively new and I am trying to make it last.

Regardless of all the above problems, it is running better then it did before, and I thank you for all the generous help and time it took for that to happen, once again thank you.

No Problem!

If you Want the Best Protection to your Computer I Suggest You Remove that antivirus Programs you have now And Download Antivir Instead.

You can download it here: http://www.free-av.com/

Also, You nead a Firewall. And i do recommend Comodo Personal Firewall.

You can download it here:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  • Disable and Enable System Restore.

If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

Windows XP System Restore Guide

  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware - Install and download AVG Anti-Spyware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using AVG Anti-Spyware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

Let me know if you still receive problems :)

Thank You!

Two last questions, under the users of this computer(before you startup the computer and it shows the users) there is this new one called HP Administrator, is that bad?

Also is there a way to close this thread or get rid of it or should I just leave it alone? Now that everything is pretty much fixed I do not think it is necessary to keep it alive.

Lastly, thank you very much for all the help and the best of luck to you! Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you!

Those account are Normal If you are using a HP Pc.

We'll Just leave this topic.

I'm glad i could help you, Good luck !
