The browse button in Display Properties -> Desktop tab is grayed out and background images are not selectible. Reading several similar threads in these forums and trying the recommended tools and techniques for scanning and fixing, I'm scratching my head because I've had no success. One more symptom to add; launching the GPEDIT.msc tool results in a funny script icon but general settings in the window (right pane) do not show any settings.

You do know your on a Novell network right? You don't have administrative privileges, and if i told you hold to ungrey the browse button or get the gpedit to work that would be hacking, which i think is illegal....yup it is. BTW the log is completely clean.

I did not give the Novell messaging client much thought. There is a Novell messaging login that can be bypassed; the computer itself does not challenge for a local login. This is a college student's laptop and she is home for the summer. Dad bought the computer three years ago from Dell -- university makes you buy your own.

Definitely have attempted hacking this laptop but only to "fix" the background image issue. Controlling what images a student places on their personal asset's desktop seems small potatoes for a college network admin.

Completely ignorant of what Novell can control, but performing a gpresult shows nothing controlling the laptop except the local group policy.

I'd appreciate it if you would share how to re-enable the display properties. Thank you for the clean bill of health (HijackThis log).

Thank you,
_Scott

Download Tweak Xp from here. It is a program that lets you easily change windows settings you should be able to do whatever using that program. Its pretty self explainitory how to use it.(It also comes with a help menu though)
