windows explorer keeps closing down/

Windows98se. I am talking about Windows Explorer not Internet explorer. For no apparent reason,there appears a box with this inside,'The program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.If the problem persists contact the program vendor" Details- This program
caused an invalid page fault in
module <unknown> at 0000:018929c0.

I have checked for viruses with 3 programs, and the computer is clean.I have Googled and no one seems to have the answer.This page seems to be the last resort, please help.

Did you fiddle with any settings...
Were there any infections before such events...
Did you run some unknow program...
Did the scanner delete some infected files during a previos scan, especially from the system directory or some thing...

No new programs,no viruses.Ii comes up more than once,even though I carry out instruction to close. But with the exception of losing the icons from the status bar, and the notice appearing constantly, everything seems normal.I have reinstalled Windows over the existing one( Not reformatting)and it makes no difference.
