cd/dvd drive not accessable

hi, i have a compaq laptop and it has drug me through hell lately, i am having trouble finding or restoring my cd/dvd drive. it is not in the device manager and does not show under my computer. i cannot find any drivers or hardware changes anywhere. i have restored the computer back to box conditon via the recovery partition no change, i have done the registry edit for upper and lower filters but there are none. i have ran numerous virus, spyware, and malware scan with different software and get nothing. the most frustating thing is that it is enabled in the bios but doesn't list make or model # just says cd/dvdrom.

ps. it opens closes and spins up like normal, just nothing pops up and u cant find. please help

i have xp with sev pack 3 on it. the reason fo the restore was some sort of bug that really messed things up. froze background disabled web browser...

It sounds like it is infected.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Make sure that you restart the computer.

There is no malware picked up by Mbam, perhaps you had some dodgy memory? You can download mamtest (google will find it) and run it for at least 7 passes. If it shows any errors at all then you have 1 or more dodgy ram stick.

i ran the memtest a bunch of time last night with no fault. i let them go for a long time on each test also. i have yet to pull it all apart and remove the drive, but im getting close to doing that. i have read about using root kit software and running it. do you reccomend it, if so what one?

I would suggest a scandisk next, just in case there is any data corruption on your hard drive.

haha this is getting laughable cuz im past the "oh sh** its not working stage". i think now i more interested in why its not working than getting it going.

i ran a scan on both the c and recovery partition d drive all came out clean.
