Sorry to start this thread again but this annoyance is still around. I found a very superficial (what a surprise my girlfriend says!) but completely effective fix. Just look at your "start-up" programs & disable anything to do with the sound, (I used the facility on "Winclean"). The sound still works! Don't know why or how it works but it does in one easy non-threatening step.
