Many thanks. I ran the MS DOS instructions as you suggested and first it found that the disk was NTFS, then finally the message came 'Windows found not problems'. After re-booting, the CHECKDISK on I message did not appear. Hopefully all is now well.
As to ESET, I un-installed and re-installed and the icon now appears. We will see if it continues. In the meantime many thanks for your help.

-- I believe that you still need to run the chkdsk I: /x in order to remove the dirty bit setting on the drive. Otherwise, subsequent reboots may experience the same problem....

Dear PP,
Perhaps you could help me with another problem which has occurred during the course of these changes that I have been making to the system. The Soundmax icon in the System Tray has a red line through it and the message as in the title above. Also clicking the Souncmax icon in the start menu does not start Soundmax.
This appears to be a problem which other people on the web experience and I have tried some of their suggestions to no avail. One was to download a new Soundmax driver, but finding one is another matter. My Motherboard is an ASUSTek P5PE-VM. For some reason I cannot download a new driver from ASUS. Pressing the 'go' button does not work. Any help would be gratefully received.

I'm not sure if the soundmax issue is related to anything we've done here. Certainly not the HJT stuff as those were harmless. Though, I didn't see the 04 SMax4PNP.exe in the last log - but if that were the issue, there'd probably be no tray icon at all....

If there is no resulting LogIt.txt (though there should be), SC QUERY SoundMAX Agent Service will return the status of the service in question.
Likewise, you can do START > RUN > type SERVICES.MSC and verify proper running that way....

C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\Soundmax\SMAgent.exe and the start-up type is automatic.

OK - well, it probably has a different service name. Probably something shorter.
If you want, you can just use sc query ENTER at command prompt to list all the services and find what the abbreviated name is...
But, since you were able to verify that it was set to "automatic" and started, we need to look elsewhere.
I'm not altogether familiar with SoundMAX, but there must be some way to fix this short of re-installing drivers.
Let me see if I can find a Microsoft KB or other info that addresses this.

EDIT: Access services again and locate Windows Audio Service and make sure that it is set to Automatic and Started.

Dear P.P. to be precise is not easy. I believe that this problem with Soundmax started at the same time as the others that e have been discussing. It and these others followed in time after my installation of software for the HP 6110 officejet all-in-one and during the same period of time I was also installing version 8 of Second copy. Incidentally I have had problems with version 8 and have gone back to version 7.
I would try installing new software for Soundmax, but I cannot find any from an official 'Soundmax' sites. There are lots of others which purport to have Soundmax available for download, but you have to subscribe to some general software downloading service first.

I have just looked in the Soundmax Folder. The first 5 subfolders - Demo Help Logs Res and Test are all empty. The only .exe file in Soundmax is is a DLS loader for and the only install file is for Windows 2000 - DDK
Also I have remembered that no so long ago I installed MS Office 2003 in place of Office 2000. There is an MS Outlook file in the current Soundmax folder - odd

Hey, Maurice - I was going to ask about Device Manager. Did you try updating the driver via the wizard in Device Manager? I think you can get to this either via "properties" od by RightClicking on the SoundMax entry....
Though, I suspect it may ask for a disc and any online option may fail. But, worth a try nonetheless.
The thing is, you're not getting a message that the driver did not load or any other driver error.... + the service is running.

Did you look at START > CONTROL PANEL > SOUND + AUDIO DEVICES > AUDIO TAB > SOUND PLAYBACK ?
Make sure that the Default setting is SoundMAX.
-- You know, it strikes me as annoying that Soundmax or HP (and the like) cannot be bothered to have solid support for what must be fairly common problems... LOL!

Many thanks. I tried updating the driver via the Device Manager wizard. It asked for a CD (I do not have one to hand and cannot think where one would be) and then I asked it to serch elsewhere. It replied that it "could not find a better match for your hardware than that currently installed".
I also checked AUDIO DEVICES etc and SoundMAX is indeed the default setting for SOUND PLAYBACK

Well, shoot.... I do not know what to try next. I'm positive that there is a simple solution beyond reinstalling, but I don't know where to find it.
-- Let's look at Device Manager one more time and see if your Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator is functioning properly. Expand "System Devices" to find it.
-- I reckon you could try installing SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio 6.10.1.5860 and see if that clears things up. In a perfect world, it should reset everything.... 'Course we live in a far from perfect world.....

The Plug and play software device enumerator is working fine. I then downloaded Soundmax.....5860. I am running Windows XP of course. Unfortunately when I tried to install, I got the message "Installation failed. The operating system is not supported by this software". I then looked at the ReadMe file and found the following. Many thanks. I managed to download the QFE update easily, but when I started to install, I received the message:
"This is only to be used on HP consumer PC's pre-installed with Windows XP. Your PC does not match this requirement and so the installation is being aborted."
It is odd that the shape and colour of the icon for the QFE update is the same as that of the icon for setup.exe in the downloaded HP 5860 file.

Further reply. The mystery deepens. This morning I remembered that I had Driver Detective installed. When I did a search on the web for drivers for the ASUS P5PE-VM board, Driver Detective came up as a possible way. So I downloaded and installed, during the installation saying 'yes' to overwriting a newer version of the driver. Unfortunately that did not work. So I experimented with the various icons in the Soundmax folder and found that when I opened "Smax 4 (control Panel Extension), Soundmax itself opened and the blue Soundmax Icon in the System tray lost its red bar. However, I copied the Smax 4 folder to the desk top and created a shortcut there as well and then re-started the computer. Clicking on the Smax 4 (open with Control Panel), produced nothing. I clicked around again in the Soundmax folder itself and managed to open the Soundmax Control Panel properly and the icon in the system appeared in its normal blue again. This is all very odd.
One other interesting point:clicking 'about' on the Soundmax icon in the system tray returns 'Soundmax v. 5': All the files in the Soundmax folder refer to version 4.
I have also checked that Windows Media Player is working well.

Another piece of possibly interesting information - when teh Soundmax icon in the system tray has a red bar across it, clicking 'about' just returns a list 'Preferences' About Smax, exit'. When the icon is fully blue, 'about' returns in addition 'Smax control panel', 'Windows Media Player' and 'DLS Loader'.

What the heck was HP doing to create that whacking great list of restore points? You can reduce the size of your sysrestore folder so that you don't have quite so many RPs. But with HP on board it does seem that you do actually need quite a few. Wow.... HP n M$.... guns at noon.

Weird logs. Last RP with Smax is for its removal. Yet it is there later in the DDS as installed. Fine. I guess.
Anyway.... this is the startup entry in your reg: mRun: [SoundMax] "c:\program files\analog devices\soundmax\Smax4.exe" /tray
Is that the exe you clicked?
Does this exist in the folder: C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\Core\smax4pnp.exe ? Is it the one you clicked?
If so create [add] another mrun key the same as the one above, but [SoundMAXPnP] = "C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\Core\smax4pnp.exe"
And restart.

Many thanks. I too have been away over Saturday night. In any case I am grateful for any time that you can spare. I have just posted a reply, but it asked me to log in as a new user and then said that the name was taken already. So I had to lose the post and start again.
First question, I did indeed click "C:\program files\ analog devices\SoundmaxSmax4.exe.
Second, there is no 'Core' folder within Analog Devices. Soundmax is the only folder there.
Third, I did also run Smax4pnp.exe. I have run it again now and immediately the red mark disappeared from the Soundmax icon in the system tray and Soundmax control panel was 'available. I the re-started the computer as you suggested, but the Soundmax icon was now crossed out in red and 'Soundmax audio was not present' and 'You cannot use Soundmax Control Panel'.
