Bogus critical system error message

I need some help.. I have a critical system error message icon flashing on my task bar that wont go away.. when i click on it, an internet explorer window pops up with an advertisement for VirusBuster software... how do i get rid of this...

Got it fixed,, thanks. ran some spyware software, then a registry cleaner, then thru one of these forums found that rename a file syycum.dll to another name,, then rebooting fixed the problem. Im all cleaned up and good to go....

Hello i'm having the same problem but its the virus busters one that comes up. By the way i'm not very good with computers. All i've done so far is tried ad-ware se and v cleaner. Any Help would be grealy appreciated.

Sound like the browser has been hijacked

try this

right click anywhere on your desktop with mouse
select properties
select desktop
select Customize Desktop
select Web in desktop items
the onlt thing that should be in the Web Pages is My Current Home Page if you find any other websites in this box click on them and delete

restart your computer

well i looked in their and there was only my home page (i think my previous attempts got rid of that side of the problem) but i've still got the ! icon in tray with the annoying message. Thanks for the suggestion i might need that at a later date.
