Windows updates will not install on my computer as it says I dont have a valid copy. I reinstalled windows and had to enter the key to get it to load and that worked so I know my copy is valid. The system is degrading by the day as windows no longer works correctly such as windows installer does not work so I cannot load new programs. How do I get MS to recognize my copy so I can get all the updates and hopefully correct whatever is wrong.

thanks!

Is it (or has it been) installed on more than one computer?

If so then its been blacklisted

... and if it has been blacklisted then you either need to buy a new copy or telephone Micrososft to sort it out.

There are two or three possibilities. Normally, if you've used up the tolerant number of installs (I foget the number, 3 I think), it'll tell you that and suggests you contact Microsoft.

If it's been Keygenned and activated by another person then you'll get some sort of validity message (I've never had this message!).

If you bought the copy second hand, then that's your answer.

@ Boban
How will enablement of logging solve the problem? He has the message telling him what's wrong with his install attempt.

He may have a point. On a machine of mine i kept getting "Access Denied" when installing service pack 1 because i had a corrupted registry

thanks for the responses. This board is really excellent. My copy has only been installed on this one machine. The only thing i can think of is it was repaired once and maybe they installed their copy onto it. I have since reinstalled my copy over it. When I did this I selected the ugrade option which allowed all my data to remain on the computer. That is when it asked me for my keycode which i entered and it allowed the install to complete. Sounds like the best solution is to contact Microsoft. Do I do this via their website or do they have a phone number where I could talk to a real person?

There should be a number available

this number is from google ,but you will need to be at the winxp activation to enter the numbers they give you ,and if you were at that page the phone number to call will also be there , Windows Product Activation phone number (for the US anyhow) is 1-888-571-2048

alsocheck this open mycomputer go to help and you will see is this copy of window legal click it !
