hopefully someone can help me. My internet explorer (I'm in safe mode now) and my computer won't open. IE looks like its loading, then halfway through the loading it disappears. I ran ad-aware and spy sweeper and found a bunch of crap so far, but it didn't solve the problem. I tried system restore, but it gives me an error about srrstr.dll and won't come up. Here's my hi-jack this log. The only other thing I can think of that caused this was the deletion of a couple of .dll's during a program removal. Could this cause the same problem, and if so, what fixes it?
Thanks so much!

Just installed Service Pack2 last week and it was running fine so I don't think this contributed

Hi Tim, first off, hhijackthis should be in run from it's own folder, not your desktop (like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe). Next, you should update hijackthis using either the Update feature within it, or here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

To fix your .dll problems, I suspect you will need to do an in-place upgrade. Instructions for doing that can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...1&Product=winxp

After you update hijackthis and put it in it's own folder, post a new log.

I updated Hijackthis and put it in it's own folder. New log is below.
What is an in-place upgrade for the .dlls? Also, the microsoft link for that did not work.
Thanks for your help DLH!

It's basically a repair for XP; the link apparently got changed, this one should work:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341

Someone should be along shortly to review your log.

Hmmm... doing an in place upgrade could be a problem. I never got a Win XP Cd when I bought the computer. I have a friend that has a burned copy of XP professional, but I have Win XP Home edition on the computer that's messing up.

I would prefer to fix this in a way other that reinstalling windows if at all possible.
Thanks!

Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked':

Reboot into normal mode after doing the above, close all instances of Internet Explorer, rescan with hiajckthis & post the fresh log please.

WEll, I'm in normal mode and usnig my Internet Explorer, so it worked! My my computer also works. If you look at the previous log, under what you told me to click fix checked on, Sidestep is an add-on button for a plane fare finder website. I put it there. So I dno't know if it was necessary to fix that one. But, I can easily re-install that if I want to. Can you tell me more details on what it was that I had? I'm interested to know how I caught it.
Also, when I was having the problems, when IE would come up for just a split second and then go away, I noticed things like casino, pharmacy, gambling where the toolbar was on the right hand side.

Here's the new log: Am I clean? Thanks, thanks, thanks!

Go here for info on sidestep.
Questmod go here.

Log looks good :).

Good thing I don't have my modem hooked up, huh?
And this is what I read about sidestep- it looks as if its safe to install

Description
SideStep is a travel price comparison service implemented as an IE Explorer Bar.

It is no longer considered unsolicited commercial software and is not a threat.

Distribution
For a while SideStep was bundled by Grokster, iMesh, Xolox and FavoriteMan. This bundling has now been stopped.

Removal
SideStep can be removed from its entry in the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs feature.

Thanks for your help in this matter! Where do I send payment? :cheesy:

To help keep your system safe, look in crunchies signature for "How you got infected" and install Spywareblaster (don't forget to update it).
