I have Home Search Assistent on my computer that uses Windows XP. I tried using Adware but that didn't work. I found some directions online (using a Google search of "Home Search Assistent AND removal") and found some really complicated steps. Can anyone direct with me with simples steps to remove Home Search Assistent. It's been there for awhile and I'm slowing losing the ability to use certain functions like AIM. Thank you so much if you can help!!!!

Unfortunately, most variants of the Home Search Assistant (HSA) are very difficult to remove. The methods of infection used by HSA variants are constantly evolving/changing, and they have the ability to "morph" the names of the malicious files they use in such a way that the names of those files can change every time you reboot your computer. That being the case, there are no "simple steps" for 100% assured removal.

1. The free utilities "about:buster" and "HSRemove" can remove some of the HSA variants. Download the programs from the following site and run them. Read the instructions on the download pages carefully:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4289.html
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4286.html

2. At the above site there is also a "spyware" removal tutorial which has more information on general prevention/removal techniques and tools; you should give it a read:

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

2. Download HijackThis:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Once downloaded, follow these instructions to install and run the program:

Create a new separate folder on your drive for HijackThis, move the program into thids folder, and run it from there. (Don't run HJT from within any Temp or Temporary Internet folder, and don't run it directly from your desktop.) Do not have HJT fix anything yet, only have it scan your system! Once the scan is complete, the "Scan" button will turn into an option to "Save log...". Save the log in the folder you created for HiajckThis, open the log in Windows Notepad, and cut-n-paste the entire contents of the log here. The log contents will tell us a lot about what "nasties" have crept into your system, and once we analyse the log we can tell you what to do from there.

Thank you for responding!! I really appreciate it. :) One of the files says to unzip it. How do I do that? I remember waaay back I had to do that once but it wasn't successful.

With older versions of Windows you needed a third-party program to deal with .zip files, but Windows XP has that ability built-in now.

Just right-click on the zipped file or folder and choose the "Extract" or "Extract All" option. This will start the Compressed Folders Extraction Wizard; it's pretty straight-forward from there.

Thank you for your clarification!! I'm going to try these steps this weekend and I'll let you know how it goes. Thank you for responding!! Have a great week!

Cool. Keep us posted....

Hi! I just ran all the programs you suggested. I came up with this through HiJack! Can this computer be saved? Also AIM is no longer working on this computer.

Reboot into Safe Mode and go to:
C:\WINDOWS and delete sdkxk.exe and winfv32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete netng.dll
C:\Program Files and delete the WildTangent folder

Reboot normally, close all browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log.

Hi!
Thank you for your reply. I could not find netng.dll in C:\Windows\system32. I tried everything else but a lot of the programs weren't there as "tqjvn.dll." AIM worked for a minute but then shut down again. Here is what I have now:

You may want to print out these directions as the Internet will not be available. Please continue with the next step if you run into a problem with the current one. Just be sure to let us know what the problem was when you reply.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please download About:Buster from here: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip Once it is downloaded extract it to
c:\aboutbuster. We will use that program later in this process.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode and follow these steps:

Step 1:

Click on start, then control panel, then administrative programs, then services. Look for a service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper. Double click on that service and click stop and then set the startup to disabled. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

Step 2:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:

crta32.exe
windx32.exe

Step 3:
I now need you to delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\crta32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\windx32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sdkxk.exe

In the R1/RO lines of your hijackthis log, delete the dll file that corresponds there. In your earlier log it looked like this;

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\tqjvn.dll/sp.html#37049

C:\WINDOWS\system32\netng.dll

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

Step 4:
Then close all programs and windows and run hijackthis. Put a checkmark next to each of these entries and press the fix button when ready:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://hsremove.com/done.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,(Default) = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2B292AED-5BFF-17AE-F0D6-30E3BA7307B7} - C:\WINDOWS\d3nk.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [windx32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\windx32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [crta32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\crta32.exe

Step 5:

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware.

Go to Start>Run and type regedit.

Press enter.

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper

If Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper exists , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

Now navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper

If LEGACY_Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

If you have trouble deleting a key. Then click once on the key name to highlight it and click on the Permission menu option under Security or Edit. Then Uncheck "Allow inheritible permissions" and press copy. Then click on everyone and put a checkmark in "full control". Then press apply and ok and attempt to delete the key again.

Step 6:

This is the step where we will use About:Buster that you had downloaded previously.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.

When it completed move on to step 7.

Step 7:

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Name the file as fix.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
Save this file on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\HSA]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SE]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\SW]

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear some registry entries left behind by the process.

Step 8:
Reboot your computer back to normal mode so that we can see if we need to restore some deleted files:

  • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.
  • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy). Then click Start > Run > regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll" and press the OK button
  • If you are using Windows 95, 98, or ME it is possible that the malware deleted your control.exe. Please check for the existence of this file by going to to Merijn Files control.exe and examine where the file should be for your operating system. If the file is missing then download the appropriate file and place it in the proper place according to this information.
  • Open IE, go to Tools>Internet Options>then click on the security tab, then click on custon label. Check the following settings:
    • Download Signed ActiveX controls-set to Prompt.
    • Download Un-Signed ActiveX controls-set to Disable.
    • Initialize and script ActiveX controls marked as unsafe-set to disable.

    Step 9:

Run an online antivirus scan at:

    http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Reboot and post another hijackthis log.

Thank you for your response! I have encountered several problems with these steps (stupid computer). I can no longer access the Notepad on my accessories list. I click on it but it won't open up. All past notepad documents must be opened with another program.

In step one, the path to executable field filename is C:\WINDOWS\sdkxk.exe /s. I could not delete it because I could not find it. I could not also find C:\WINDOWS\System32\crta32.exe, C:\WINDOWS\sdkxk.exe, and C:\WINDOWS\system32\netng.dll.

In addition, in step 4, I could not find RO- HKCU\SOftware\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main, Start Page=http://hsremove.com\done.thm or the HKLM version of this site. I could not find 04- HKLM\..\Run: [windx32.exe] C:\windows\windx32.exe.

There was nothing to delete from step 5. I went through step 6 and I am stuck at step 7 right now because I cannot copy the quote box into a notepad document. I can't open notepad.

Thank you in advance for your response!! I appreciate this!

Hi daruk,

First of all- welcome to TechTalk!

We ask that members not tag their questions on to a thread previously started by another member (regardless of how similar your problem might seem). Not only does it divert the focus of the thread away from the original poster's problem, but it also makes it less likely that you yourself will get the individual attention that you need.

Please start your own thread and post your question there. When you do, please try to give us as much specific info as possible regarding the problem (exact error messages, system specs, etc.).

For a full description of our posting guidelines and general rules of conduct, please see this page:
