I've been getting a lot of popups and trying to use symantec and spybot to deal with it, but that's not working. Today, when I tried to log in as Administrator to my computer, it did not load the toolbar or any icons, just the desktop background and a cursor appeared. When I logged on as a different user (with admin rights) it was fine. I ran HiJackThis and used the Deciphering the Hijack This site to do some cleaning, but I was very conservative about deleting things. I ran it again, and the output is below. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Liz

Hi and welcome to Daniweb Lizard1183. You've got a cart load of manure there :D.

===============

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

===============

Next, Open a command prompt by:

1. Clicking "Start", then "Run...".
2. Enter "cmd" (without the quotes).
3. Enter "services.msc" (without the quotes).

-

Now, locate and 'stop' the following services, if present:

WinTools for IE service (WinToolsSvc) owner ... (C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe)

Look carefully, since the name of the service (above) can be anywhere in the entry; also be careful not to 'stop' any required system services.

===============

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments(prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from this system. To do this, let's:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

guwrqv.exe*
WSup.exe*
windeck32.exe*
wifvg13n.exe*
18042.exe*
CxtPls.exe*
WToolsA.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

Desktop Search
Elite Toolbar
WinTools

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe
C:\Program Files\Bpt\bpt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ggpfvh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\guwrqv.exe
C:\windows\system32\msnavc32.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WSup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\windeck32.exe
C:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wifvg13n.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\18042.exe
C:\Program Files\CxtPls\CxtPls.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.
===============

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u WToolsB.dll
regsvr32 /u EliteToolBar version 59.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

Post back a new log after rebooting with the L2MeFix log.

Thank you for your fast response! I followed the directions you sent.

A couple questions - is "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools" different from "C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools" and if so, where do I find it?

Also - "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WIN" is a file, not a folder, right? I didn't see any files with this name, just the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS".

Below are the contents of the L2MeFix log (run before making any changes) and the HijackThis log (run after making all these changes and rebooting). I noticed that several of the items I "fixed" using HijackThis are in the log again after rebooting, but I didn't try to fix them again.

Thanks for your help!

~Liz

Have you tried running AdawareSE? can be downloades at www.lavasoft.de

Had a similar problem with continuous pop ups and Adaware solved the problem.

oo7jim. Unfortunately, Adaware cannot fix these popups, but thank you for your advice anyway :).

Liz.

is "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools" different from "C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools" and if so, where do I find it?

No. It is the same. The ~ indicates the name has been shortened.

===========

Let's continue on with the fix...

===============

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

-

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

===============

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments(prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from this system. To do this, let's:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

guwrqv.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

Desktop Search

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\guwrqv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.
===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [farmmext] C:\WINDOWS\farmmext.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [etbrun] C:\windows\system32\elitezzl32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ggpfvh] c:\windows\system32\ggpfvh.exe

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs

files...

C:\WINDOWS\System32\guwrqv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\farmmext.exe
C:\windows\system32\elitezzl32.exe
c:\windows\system32\ggpfvh.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Post back a new log after rebooting and let me know how everything goes.

Thank you again. I followed your instructions, and the L2mfix logfile and HijackThis logfile (run after everything else was done and rebooted) are below.

Some comments:

Under Add/Remove programs, Desktop Search was not present.

When I ran HijackThis, I marked and fixed all the items you mentioned, as well as guwrqv.exe (which you didn't list).

When I went to "delete the following item(s), if present", the only one present was C:\WINDOWS\farmmext.exe.

Thanks,

Liz

Hi Liz. A few more to do.

===============

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\guwrqv.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.
===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [etbrun] C:\windows\system32\elitezzl32.exe

O20 - Winlogon Notify: RunOnce - C:\WINDOWS\system32\enp6l17s1.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad - C:\WINDOWS\system32\n0p4la7q1d.dll (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs

files...

C:\WINDOWS\System32\guwrqv.exe
C:\windows\system32\elitezzl32.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Post back a new log after rebooting and let me know how everything goes.

I followed your instructions again. Comments:

1) When running the Process manager in HijackThis, C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe was not present.
2) When deleting the files and folders specified, I realized that I had not been viewing hidden files and folders before now. Both C:\WINDOWS\isrvs and C:\windows\system32\elitezzl32.exe were present after viewing hidden folders but not before.
3) When I boot in Safe Mode, C:\WINDOWS\System32\guwrqv.exe is running. While in Safe Mode, I went to Process Manager in HijackThis to kill it, then was able to delete the file.

What is the significance of the fact that the same programs are reappearing in these locations despite the fact that I delete the files repeatedly?

The latest HijackThis logfile is below.

Thanks for your help,

Liz

I ran the full KAV scan according to the instructions from the link. My computer was running extremely slowly when I first restarted it, but seems normal now. I am posting another HijackThis log below - some of the files are still there it seems. I can also post the KAV log if you'd like.

Thanks,

Liz

You may well have a new nasty that (at the moment) there is only one fix (that I know of) for.

Yes- the indications of the Bube infection are in the log. :mad:

And unfortunately- the last time I heard from CalamityJane (last week), she'd found nothing further on removing the beast aside from the KAV scan. :(

Liz,

Let's hope KAV was able to remove enough of the nasty to enable us to clean up the leftovers:

1. Repeat crunchie's instructions for using HijackThis' process manager to kill the following processes:

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
C:\windows\system32\elitezzl32.exe

2. Hav HJT fix:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BE6BD929-1AC3-053B-CDDA-458193C45FE5} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\iofi.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [etbrun] C:\windows\system32\elitezzl32.exe
O18 - Filter: text/html - {950238FB-C706-4791-8674-4D429F85897E} - C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\mfiltis.dll

3. Boot into safe mode again and:

- try to delete the C:\Windows\isrvs folder entirely.

- delete the C:\windows\system32\elitezzl32.exe file.

- turn off XP's System Restore function if you haven't already. Instructions are here.

- empty your Recycle Bin.

4. Reboot normally and post a new log.

I followed your instructions, with these results:

1. None of these processes were present.
2. All of the items were present in the HJT scan and I had them fixed.
3. The folder and file were not present. I had not previously turned off the System Restore function, so I did that and emptied the Recycle Bin.

The HJT log is below. It's looking better to me.

Thanks,

Liz

Your new log is clean :) How is the system running now?

If things appear to be OK now, I'd suggest using Norton's Live Update to install the absolute latest virus definitions, and running a full anti-virus scan of your system. If that comes up clean, you can then re-enable System Restore.

Just a note. The reason why some of these processes reappear is that there is an executable being run that reinstalls them everytime you start the computer up. They are usually located in the registry under the HKEY.......\Run key. I had to go in there and clean some out, but I am also experienced with the registry, it is not for the inexperienced.
