I suspect I have a bad infection

My computer is not acting well. Windows XP will often not start (I'm using safe mode now), my browsers are being hijacked (both IE and Firefox), IE starts by itself (sessions noted in Task Manager), and many of the things that are suggested on this site will not install, or update, or run at all (like malwarebytes).
I will try to post the hijackthis log file. Please bare with me - I'm not an expert at this....

I would take the comp to a place like Staples (they often run free PC tune-up/cleaning campaigns) and have them either clean it or back up your info and put down a clean copy of Windows. Make sure in the future you keep your copy of Windows, your anti-virus, and your browsers up to date as out-dated versions tend to lead to huge security risks.

Do not do as suggested above or you will be ripped off for a poor job.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Make sure that you restart the computer.

Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
Select it and click Remove.
Then Download and install the newest version from here:

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Delete the MBA-M installation file that is on your pc at present.
Go back to download MBA-M again. Click on the link to download it. Select the "Save" option.
When the panel pops up to ask you where you wish to save the file, before choosing where, rename the file. I chose "bambam" in my screenshot just as an example.
Once you have saved it, try again to install it.

If it runs, update it, do a scan and remove what is found. Reboot and post the log back here.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will download, install, but will not run. I have tried renaming the file with no luck. Any other ideas on how to get this program to run??

After several tries I finally got Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed and running. I was not able to remove the java installations (maybe cause I'm running in safe mode?), and I was not able to install the new version of java (the administrator privilages prevented it). Being the impatient one I am, I deleted the java files manually.

Being the impatient one I am, I deleted the java files manually.

Bad move. If they were meant to be just deleted, that is what I would have wrote. There are lots of other entries that only an uninstall can do. You will end up with problems.

The java files are still sitting in the recycle bin - can I restore them and then properly uninstall them once I get the bigger problem resolved?

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

• You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
• Physically disconnect from the internet.
• Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
• Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
• When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
• Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

OK, I think I did everything you suggested. I was not able to get a log from combofix as when the computer rebooted my virus software started and I think caused combofix to freeze. There were at least three reboots, and they all started windows in normal mode, something that has not happened in a while. Since the system booted in to normal windows, I was able to un-install Java and install the latest version.

Just a quick question. You have Ad-aware installed (as shown in first logs posted). Did you actually try running that in safe mode? As would have at least gotten most, even if not all, the malware hooks out.

While that may be true, the OP is having trouble getting anything else installed, let alone functioning as it s'posed to. If the poster already has Ad-Aware installed, and can get into Safe Mode, then using that may well at least loosen the grip of any malware infection, even if it is simply enough to allow the likes of MWB to complete the job.

My computer is not acting well. Windows XP will often not start (I'm using safe mode now), my browsers are being hijacked (both IE and Firefox), IE starts by itself (sessions noted in Task Manager), and many of the things that are suggested on this site will not install, or update, or run at all (like malwarebytes).

Are you using any antivirus? Because if you don't I believe that your problems may come from that fact. I personally use an antivirus that didn't disappoint me. If you want a recommendation from my part try to use a good antivirus that protects your computer from spam, viruses, phishing, which has a Gamer mode module which protects you while playing games and so on...

Whilst it will do no harm to run it, I see no real benefit. I used to swear by it, but it is not what it once was.
Since running Combofix the OP has been able to get to normal mode, so may also now be able to run MBA-M.
First I want to see if the combofix logs exist though, before the OP gets a hundred and one suggestions and only ending up confused.

FWIW... Adaware would find 'Win32 Trojan TDSS' but was never able to get rid of it, or it would re-create itself on re-boot, cause it find it again after the next scan. I had virus software running--
AVG 8, adaware, zone alarm, and have had good luck with them up till now. It's funny, it seems these problems started right after I updated AVG and Adaware. The norton running now is a trial version which was of little help at the time, as the virus would not let it update it's files. It seems to be getting better, I am able to update software and install stuff without the problems I had earlier. I'll post what crunchie asked for tonight (I'm at work now). So far, his advice has improved my situation greatly.

One thing I need to ask - In an attempt to make things less complicated while fixing this problem, I had disconnected a 500 gig USB external drive. Could this drive be infected also? How can I disinfect it without compromising all the work that has been done so far?
