thanks for the link caperjack

any idea what i can do about the about:blank homepage tho?

Download & instal Adaware from here
& update it B4 scanning.
In settings under 'scanning,' have it set to
'scan within archives,'
'scan active processes,'
'scan registry,'
'deepscan registry'
'scan my IE Favourites for banned URL's,'
'scan my host's file.'
In 'tweaks' under 'scanning engine' set it to 'unload recognised processes during scanning.'
Also in 'tweaks' under 'cleaning engine' set it to 'Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion' & 'let Windows remove files in use at next reboot.'
Select 'activate in-depth scan' before starting scan.
When the scan is finished select 'next.'
Remove what it finds by placing a check in the box to the left of the object. Reboot

Download & instal Spybot S&D from here Update it B4 scanning. Go into settings & have it check for Beta releases also & download if available.
After the scan is complete, have spybot fix everything marked RED.
On the page that first opens when you start Spybot there is an option to immunise, you should do this. In the immunise section there is also a link to download Spywareblaster. Download that & you can keep it updated by selecting the same link that you use to download it. Reboot

Download HijackThis from here & unzip it into it's own, permanent folder, (not a temporary folder & not on the desktop). Start HJT & press the scan button. When the scan is finished the scan button will change to save. Save the log to a text file, copy the entire contents of the text file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is harmless & even necessary to the running of your system.

i did so and here is my results

You also have the latest Coolwebsearch infection that is almost impossible to remove. When you think you've got it, it comes back. Try this first & if it doesn't work I will provide a link to the long winded fix.

Download CWShredder from here

Stay OFFLINE.
Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here & Close all (browser) windows & have HJT fix these entries by placing a check in the appropriate box=

Still in safe mode, open CWShredder & close all other windows. Have CWShredder fix all that it finds.

Run Adaware again.

Reboot normally.

Moved this to the new Security forum, as that is where we are now concentrating virus/spyware/etc. questions.

:)

thanks for the help crunchie

the link you gave me for the long fix, will that clear everything up?

Apparently it does yes. If you don't?can't go through all that, perhaps it might be beneficial to download a different browser until there is a quick fix? M$ have to close the hole that this new variant is getting through yet.
Mozilla & Opera are not affected by this trojan.

crunchie, i want to start it, but i cannot find how to back up my files, it says start then programs then accessories then system tools then backup, the thing is i never have the backup thing under system tools

even when i logged out and logged in as administrator in safe mode

also where it says xxxxxx is that just like naming a file or does that just show there is going to be random letters/numbers?

... where it says xxxxxx is that just like naming a file or does that just show there is going to be random letters/numbers?

The later; registry CLSID entries consist of strings of hexidecimal numbers such as:

{15E079B0-DF30-883F-60F1-615988E969AD}

crunchie, i want to start it, but i cannot find how to back up my files, it says start then programs then accessories then system tools then backup, the thing is i never have the backup thing under system tools

Sorry DMR, but I have to contradict you here. The CLSID comes before the random letters of the dll.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{Xxxxxxxxxxxxx}< the xxx's will appear as fjsyrv.dll or along those random lines.
Also you do not need to back up the whole computer, only the registry. There is a link at the bottom of that page that shows you how.

i know that crunchie, but the backup thing is not in the list of system tools under start, programs, accessories, system tools

i heard somewhere you had to be in administator mode to be able to do it, so i got in safe mode and in administration mode and still no go... any ideas?

If you go to Start/Run & type in 'regedit' the registry editor opens. Select 'registry' on the toolbar & then export registry. That's it.
What you are after can be found in the 'help' index. Find Backup utility then 'display' & there should then be a link available for the backup.

Sorry DMR, but I have to contradict you here. The CLSID comes before the random letters of the dll.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{Xxxxxxxxxxxxx}< the xxx's will appear as fjsyrv.dll or along those random lines.

No, I understand that the dll itself will have a random name, but I was referring to this part of the article:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{Xxxxxxxxxxxxx}
.
.
Where "xxxxxxxxx" represents the folder
containning the
random dll file.

I thought that part was referring to the long string name of the CLSID entries; perhaps I was mistaken.

:)

alright, i went into regedit and exported my registry and i see that its saved

but i still had no luck getting into the backup utilities

What else is there to back up?? You are only changing the registry.

Nor mine, my friend- trust me...

alright tomorrow i will start the processs muahaha

I had the same problem, but got rid of it. You have to download a virus program at www.kaspersky.com. You should not have any other virus program when you run it.It takes VERY long time to scan your pc, and after that you use hijack and remove any referanse to about:blank.
Good luck to you all

Can anyone else confirm this fix? Does kaspersky's antivirus take care of this?
