Hello-

I am hoping that I can get some help on a pesky issue I have going on. Pardon my ignorance here folks.

We trying to open IE, I get an error message. It says:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Buffer Overrun Detected!
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.

At this point, IE shuts down and I have no web access. It's strange b/c I can still use my Outlook Express account. I can then gain access back to the web by turning on my pop up blocker (adsubtract). As soon as I open IE again, I get the same message and IE closes and my pop up blocker closes itself.

I've tried Norton, spyware blaster, spybot search & destroy, etc.
I've also gone through the "read before you post" steps in this forum. I was unable to run the ESET scan and the Deckard's scan. I'll post the Malware log and the HJT log. Here are the two logs:

Upgrade from IE6 to IE7 and see if it goes away.

Also, use CODE tags in future, i added some for you.

btw, if you dont want to upgrade, try checking to see whether IE is corrupted or not.

sfc /scannow at the run prompt willdo the trick. Its fairly silent, just reboot afterwards. you will need an XP cd.

I REALLY appreciate your help on this!

Ok. I upgraded to IE7. I'm still getting the same error message with the same results.

I do not have the XP cd, so I don't think I can run the scan. What's next?

Thanks again!

try the scan anyway

What are your system specs?

try upgrading to SP3?

Tried the scan. Unfortunately I need the cd.

I'm about to show my ignorance:

I don't know what you mean by system specs and I don't know what SP3 is.

Sorry. Thanks again for helping me out!

Service Pack 3?

Ok. Upgraded to SP3 and re-started.

Still have my problem.

Also still trying to find my system specs for you.

my bad.

I'll try that.

I installed the new runtime library.

Re-booted in safe mode with networking and I did not recieve the message, but got the same result. Wow, this is frustrating.

okay so it could be a conflict with one of your IE addons

go to run and type:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

WITH the " marks

This will start IE with no addons. try it and see if the error occurs

Gave that a shot. The error still occurs.

This happens everytime the error shows up:

I'll open IE and almost instantaneously the error message shows up as well. As long as the error message reamins open, I can use the internet. If I try to close the message, or click on the "ok" button, I lose internet capability. When I close the message (or click ok), my pop up blocker (adsubtract) closes itself. I can only get access back to the web if I turn my blocker back on. Then the process repeats itself. Very strange (to a layman anyway).

Does that make any sense?

Try deinstalling your popup blocker and see if the error occurs

Yeah, I did that a couple of times before I posted here. Still no good.

I deinstalled it again to make sure. I do not get the error message, but I have no access to the internet. I had to re-install it for the internet connection to work. Crazy.

sounds like some sort of conflict with your security software then

moved to XP forum, may get more attention there

Thanks guys. I'll give firefox a try and let you know how that goes.

I tried Firefox and got the same results. Anything else I can try?

Thanks!

Ok guys. See if this makes any sense. The company that made my popup blocker (intermute) apparently sold the rights to another company called "trendmicro". Trendmicro recently changed their website to disable adsubtract. At startup, adsubtract could be trying to reach the intermute site with no luck. Does that make any sense? Anything I can do to fix that?

uninstall program then download ccleaner and run the registry fixer
