Hello I have a windows XP media center 2005 Pc
Its been a while since I used it. But heres whats going on with this.
The computer boots normally, When I get to the desktop, I cant copy and paste, or click and drag, anything on the computer. The network card has stopped working so I do not have internet. I also can not install Avast It seems to install properly, But when I run it, I get an error The application failed because autoconfig is wrong, or I when trying to uninstall programs from the add and remove programs I get "windows installer can not be accessed" ( I also tried to install and uninstall in safe mode, but I get the same error). When I boot to safe mode, I still cant copy and paste, ( I checked the internet options and copy and paste is enabled). This computer also will not connect to any network, If I go into the network and install new network, it works like it should but I do not get the icon that shows the network.
What I do have is an external hard drive, that I can download files to and run on the broken computer.
Unfortunately the Hijack this program needs to be installed in its own folder, Which I have on my external, but I cant copy and paste, Nor can I right click and send to my documents, ( nothing happens).
To clairify Copy and paste is not working I can copy but cant paste.
Add and remove programs dont work.
Safe mode seems to be effected as well.
No Internet.
My questions,
#1 is there a program that I can download for free, that has a current virus database included with the exe that I can download? and try to run from my external hard drive?
#2 I have tried a restore and repair, Nothing seems to be working. I have an XP home CD, I set the computer to boot from CD drive, and go about installing a fresh install of the OS, but when I get to the point where it asks to check for current versions of windows, It dont see the hard drive.
I did manage to get ALL the files off the computer that I need. I opened each one individually and then clicked file and then save, Which I saved to my external hard drive. So if needed a fresh install of windows XP pro, however when I put in my CD it tells me that the version of windows I am trying to install is older then the version thats on the computer. and then reboots.
I did manage to get a HJT log generated. Can someone at least help me identify what virus or malware is on this computer. Or even better tell me how to get the friggen thing off.
