I have a wireless network through the router that AT&T provided. I have three lap tops, two Dells and an Asus. One Dell and the ASUS connects with no problem. The other Dell connects sometimes and sometimes it does not. Currently, when ipconfig is run the Dell doesn't have an IP address, subnet mask, it does however recognize the Connection-specific DNS Suffix.

Please help.

Also, when I run ipconfig/renew I get a message "no operation can be performed while media is disconnected.

Fixed it, at cmd line I ran

netsh winsock reset catalog

and then

netsh int ip reset reset.log

Media still shows disconnected, I don;t know why, but it is picking up all of the IP address, etc. and is connecting to the internet.

Thought I fixed. The above works, but when the PC is shut off and then turned on, it loses the IP addresses etc., and you have to redo the above. When you do, it reobtains the IP addresses and connectivity, but loses them again at shut off.

Ideas please.

Since you are using netsh, does netsh winsock show catalog contain all valid files?

None of the files had any type of message indicating they were invalid.

Ok, if you don't recognise any, search for them. And is your DHCP client service set to automatic, and started at boot?

I don't understand. How do I check for these items?

DHCP: you could go cmd > ipconfig /all - it will show status of DHCP Enabling.
Something else you could try is this wizard: go CP, Network Connections > New connection wizard; Set up a Home or Small Office Network, and follow through. It does all the checking, installing etc.

DHCP is enabled. Ran through the windows set up, worked, but then doesn't on reboot. Again, going back to the first post I made, if the tool bar is blue, internet connection works, if it is the lighter color, it does not.

Currently, the windows set up has moved the status on the wireless connection from doing anything due to another system, to recognizing the wireless but just sitting there and trying to connect. All other computers connect with no problem. Additionally, I have moved today from AT&T to Comcast, and all computers save the Dell connect, no problem, and my Dell has the exact same problem as before.

Also, when the internet icon is right clicked, it recognizes the wireless connection, speed of 53 MBPS and signal strength, very good, but doesn't connect, but remains as acquiring network status. When right clicked and View available wireless networks is selected, I get the error message of Windows cannot configure this wireless connection. If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, use that software.

The only other software I think I have is the intel software related to the intel wireless 3945ABGNet and that is disabled.

OK, now on powering up the computer, the sound icon was gone, and there was no evidence under device manager that a sound system existed. Tool bar was the lighter color. Could not connect to internet. Powered down and restarted, tool bar was back to blue and sound is back and can connect to internet no problem.

Help, help, please, I am convinced that this it tied to the color of the tool bar, when blue, everything works, when not, not internet connection and now maybe no sound.

What is this toolbar which is changing colour? The taskbar?
Is your TCP/IP protocol set to obtain Ip & DNS server addresses automatically? It should be if you used the network wizard...
In Device Manager, View, click Show hidden devices... check for errors [red or yellow icons].
"The only other software I think I have is the intel software related to the intel wireless 3945ABGNet and that is disabled." -if Windows XP detects this then it will not use its wireless configuration utility; you should use the Intel software.

The toolbar that is changing color is the taskbar. When it is blue, everything works, when it is pale green, internet won't connect and now sound is gone.

There are no errors in the Device Manager, Show Hidden Devices.

When green, windows will not detect wireless networks as it shows intel device as disconnected. When the intel device is checked, it is operating fine.

I will have to check on the TCP/IP protocel when I am green, I am blue right now, so everything is working. Would you like me to post an inconfig all when I am green>

Because you have a connection atm, could you do this, please? I am beginning to suspect malware because of the task bar colour change. Those two colours are std scheme colours, but something is causing the switch.
==download hijackthis: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download5554.html
-copy it to a new FOLDER placed either alongside your program files or on your desktop and then... rename hijackthis.exe to imabunny.exe
-in that folder start HijackThis by dclicking the .exe
-CLOSE ALL OTHER APPLICATIONS and any open windows including the explorer window containing HijackThis.
-click the Scan and Save a Logfile button. Post the log here.
And yes, to see the ipconfig report when green would be handy.

ipconfig all when I am blue, I will post same when I am back green

is there any carp software like at&t dsl or something provided by your isp
get it off your pc, it is useless and in your way

r click my pc, manage, device mgr, any yellow exclamation points?

even if not,

download wireless driver from dell
in device mgr, update driver
download wireless utility from dell
install it

restart the pc

connects now?

if not
uninstall tcpip from within the client:
r click network, properties, double click wireless
uninstall tcpip
install tcpip

restart the pc

google for winsock fix
fix winsock

reboot pc

Nothing shows as bad in that log, Wdawg. But please uninstall completely the SpyDoctor service and AVG9, then reinstall AVG9 only.

I have to add... do you have any theme changer software? The taskbar colour comes from shellstyle.dll in Windows\Resources folder, but i don't know when that is used/read, or by what... must be something at startup, or logon, anyway, by a user. Anyway, something is interfering with its use.... and because you have TWO AV services running, it could be that. [your SD has an AV service in it].

Open command prompt - Ping computername

Should come up with IP address

So I had a look, but the process of changing taskbar colour is too involved for me:
svchost.exe > rundll32.exe uxtheme.dll, Resources\\luna.msstyles... and so on. I don't know what is triggering your change, but it is more than just the colour that is invovled.
Your SpywareDoctor and AVG9 haven't trapped any malware so might I suggest a rootkit scan?
Firstly..
==Get CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ - and install it in a new folder. You should keep this one for general use. I set the installation checkboxes only to open from the recycle bin. It's neater that way.
Now run CCleaner from the recycle bin rclick menu using its default settings [if you set up CCleaner as i suggested, rclicking the bin icon should give you the Open CCleaner option...].
If you have FireFox open the Applications tab and ensure at least that Cookies and Cache are checked.
Select the Cleaner icon, press Run Cleaner.
Run CCleaner in any other Accounts.
[To customize file cleaning select the options you wish to use via the Windows and Applications tabs ..]
Then...
Download this: http://www.gmer.net/download.php - the .exe will have some obscure name.
Close all applications. Start it by dclick; if you do NOT get a warning at startup about rootkit activity, press Scan.
When the scan completes, press Copy, and paste to notepad. Attach to your reply post [Advanced reply].
