hi
recently my PC has been running very slowly. this happened before but i put some more RAM in and my PC started working fine. Now i can't put more RAM in as i have the maximum amount my PC can handle. i have defragmented my PC, run disk cleanup, run scandisk and scanned my PC with my norton antivirus 2007 non of them helped.

I realy need some help my PC is really slow it takes around half an hour to start up and login. luckily im very patient. I hope somebody can help

also MS-DOS (commnd prompt) windows just keep on opening themselves. I delete the files and they just reappear so i am presuming it is spyware.

thanks in advance for all your help in advance.

I ran Hijackthis and got the following:

oh and if u hav any programs running in the system tray thing (in the bottom right of ur screen) that u arnt using just close em which should speed up a little

Follow this -> Start -> run -> msconfig (press enter) -> untick any programs which don't relate to windows or have C://windows/... as there location, definatly will increase start up speed, may speed up general surfing.

i,ve done the msconfig thing before it did not help at all

right, how much RAM does your computer have?

it has 762MB of RAM and can handle 1GB but both my RAM slots are used with one 256MB RAM and another 512MB RAM.

The first post helped my CPU stop hanging around 100% but it only made my PC very slightly faster it is hardly noticeable

Have you tried running your system with one memory stick installed? Install first the old one then check what will happen.

If you are running a lot of programs, or a couple of heavy RAM draining softwares, such as games with a music player, you will need at least 1Gb of RAM in total so 512Mb per slot.
Check on Cruical technologies site if you are thinking of upgrading your RAM.
Crucial techs computer dignostic tool can be found here: http://crucial.com/systemscanner/loader.aspx?Agree=Yes
Simply click on the download box, then double click the icon that you have downloaded, and the program will check your system and display what your system currently has, and can cope with if you choose to upgrade. You must be online to carry out this check.

that website says i should install 2GB of RAM but the place i bought my PC from (PC World) says my PC can only hold a max of 1GB. the website also says that my PC performance is good.
also when i bought my PC i only had 256MB of RAM and it worked perfectly fine

Well crucial is actually scanning your system, while the Pc World people are total morons, no offense to any here, but the ones i know of don't know what CPU stands for! Also the PC world guy may have meant 1Gb per slot, not overall.
If it could be a virus/spyware try AVG's versions of these, they really are very good, found lots that norton doesn't pick up!

i have since writing this thread realised PC world people are complete idiots. i took my pc in for a health check and they removed all spyware/viruses they could find. Then my friend who is a spyware expert found about 20 other viruses/spyware.

Ever since removing the spyware my PC does run slightly faster but it still takes around 10/15 mins to startup and login

How much space are you using on your HDD at the moment
Also never go to PC world for the tech guys, i knew more about computers than one :P

i have 32.9 GB HDD space using 19.1 GB have 13.8 GB free

Using over half od your total space, so your computer going to be slightly slower, have you done tried to unclutter your PC, by un-installing un-necessary programs, might help. Also do another Disk Defrag, and Disk cleanup and run antivirus/spyware checker again just to make sure your computer is at the best possible performance it can be. How old is your computer?

I had this exact same problem about a week ago. All I had to do was reinstall xp and now my computer will boot up and login in less than a minute.

i ran all that stuff again antivirus detected a few viruses and removed them hasnt made a difference

My PC is only about 1 year old

i dont have a windows xp CD
