good day everyone! im a 19 year old noobie and i really need your help right here... im not sure if im in the right category but im hoping someone could help me here...

when i log in to my account in normal mode, everything is black (no wallpaper, not even a taskbar)... at first i thought my system hung or was still loading but when i pressed ctrl+shift+esc the task manager opened up... i suspected that explorer wasnt able to load during start up...when i checked the processes, explorer.exe was not present...

but if i try to run in safe mode or in "directory services restore mode" (im not sure if im right...but it shows safe mode in 1280x1024 resolution and has networking and audio devices functioning), explorer is functioning correctly... i can also open internet browsers in normal mode but when i go to computer>c:\ it says that c:\ in not accesible ... acces denied...

i tried browsing the net for similar problems and most sites and forums shows that users that hav similar problems with mine used HijackThis to report a log file of the system... the i tried downloading HijackThis 2.0 and run the analyze or scan then this is my log file:

i also ran an online scanner ( http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml ) which found 2 malware threats... they were patch files for ESET Smart Security...

i also ran a-squared anti malware and found nothing

also, before all this happened, i remember installing acronis true image home and defragler... i acronis prompted me to restart my pc after installing but i chose not to...
im not sure but i think i remember running a system clean up through acronis then ran defragler but it failed to analyze my drive c:\... i tried it twice but it failed... then i restarted my pc...now this is what happened... now i uninstalled both programs thinking they could have caused the problem but nothing changed...

i also tried system restore through my vista installation disc but system cannot find any restore points... system restore is also not available in safe mode and i cant even access it in normal mode... i tried taskmngr>new task>browse>control panel>windows backup and restore then when i right click on it, it doesnt show anything on the right panel, but if i left click on it and choose explore, it says "the application has failed to start because the side-by-side configuration is incorrect. please see the application event log for more details."

i really need your help guys... this could be the best christmas gift for me...
happy holidays everyone!

Go into safe mode (normal safe mode!!! just safe mode nothing else like directory services or networking) and go to the run box (i think on vista you use the search box thingy) and type

sfc /scannow

You may need your CD. It will check whether windows files like explorer.exe are missing or corrupted. Reboot once (into safe mode again) after its done. It wont tell you if its fixed anything or not.

Once you are back in safe mode after rbeooting right click on the C drive in my computer and click properties theb go into the (tools?) tab . There will be an option for error checking. Run it. It may ask you to reboot.

It should fix (at least some of) your problems

i already tried sfc /scannow just before you asked me to and it did repair some/one of my system files...its the log on window...just before i ran sfc /scannow, i customized my logon screen using stardock's vista logon changer (im not sure if thats the name of the program)...
after reading your reply, i re-ran the sfc /scannow and after the scanning, it didnt show any logfile saying that it have been succesfully finished and needs to restart...the cmd prompt screen just dissapeared... then i started to schedule a check disk for c:\ and restarted my
pc... suprisingly, it didnt show any check disk process... it skipped to the boot screen and just after seeing my bootscreen, everything stops... i cant see the logon window anymore...
my monitor turned blank and the monitor's power button is just blinking... sometimes i also get a blue screen saying it might be a hardware problem blah blah... what should i do now? i cant logon to normal mode nor safe mode... im now using a second OS using another hard drive...please help me....

Sounds like you will have to reinstall windows

Sounds like you will have to reinstall windows

you cant tell me to reformat my OS just like that since you were the one who suggested something that would worsen my situation...

for other viewers that are willing to help, here's more details on what happened just after jbennet suggested something that wouldnt work:

i had another hard drive installed with the same OS and it ran normally but if i chose to logon to my original OS, this is what it shows right after the bootscreen and before the logon screen:

"problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen apperars again, follow these steps:

check to be sure you have adequate disk space. if a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for friver updates. try changing video adapters.

check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. if you need to use safe mode to disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced start up options, and then select safe mode.

what does this mean? its impossible that i have a hardware problem for i am running another OS in the same setup right now... just another hard disk... but when i view the old hard disk with the corrupted startup, i can see its files... damaged disk is not a possibility too... any ideas? anyone?

STOP: 0x0000007E means a damaged device driver or system service.

look, as my sig says, TRY MY SUGGESTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK!

there is a few more things to try:

boot into safemode. The problem i think is stemming from your modified login screen (which you didnt say anything about in the first place! being removed by SFC and the system therefore being unable to spawn a login interface.)

Where it should be the login screen hit Control+Alt+Del twice. See if an alternative (windows 2000 style) login screen pops up instead of the welcome screen.

If not then you will most likely need to reinstall your o/s but you may be able to "upgrade" which means installing over your existing OS. Read up on it first as its easy to wipe it by accident, but if successful you should be able to keep your stuff (might want to back up your data from your alternative OS anyway first)

ei, im sorry if i over reacted with your reply...thanks for still replying...

about my modified login screen, ive been using that for months now, i havent encountered any problems with that... and just before you suggested me to run a sfc /scannow, already did one myself and that repaired my login screen... then when i received your reply to my thread, i ran the scan again and it was then that all this happened...

i also cant run at safemode... loading stucks up at "crcdisk.sys" (im not sure of that)...
i cant run system restore mode, not even "last known good config"...

You can boot this Vista DVD and get access to options allowing you to run system restore. Boot the DVD and try restoring to say, a week ago.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Recovery_Environment

you may want to try running the vista startup repair first.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista_Startup_Process

uhhhmmmm jbennet, that is what i have in my vista installation disc... i tried that also... i tried vista startup repair first, it then performed a scan disk on the startup repair interface then restarted my pc, nothing's changed... about system recovery, i already said that system recovery cannot find any recovery points to recover to... i wanted to try and download the options you gave me, maybe it'd work better but wikipedia doesnt show any download links for that...you have any?

oh, about running in safemode...i was right, it stops at \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys

any thoughts about that? should i overwrite the .sys file with the drivers from the OS that i am using right now? would that help my problem?

i googled it. apparently crcdisk.sys is very buggy and it causes vista to BSOD after repair/install

Apparently there is a way to fix it:

1) plug in a ps/2 keyboard and uplug your USB one
2) disable USB keyboard support in the BIOS settings

one guy on an MS forum said to then:

I've solved the problem. I just deleted sptd.sys from <WINDOWS>\System32\Drivers\.

This driver was installed by DAEMON Tools. Vista fails to load if you are trying to install it over XP with old DAEMON Tools installed. And Vista Upgrade advisor knows nothing about it. To solve the problem download and install latest DAEMON Tools before upgrading your OS.

OR (if you are already in progress of Vista installation and have this problem) load from your bootable Windows Vista CD and choose to restore. Tnen choose 'other options' and go to console. Then go to <WINDOWS>\System32\Drivers\ and delete sptd.sys. Now restart. Vista will load fine after it and continue installation.

do you have daemon tools?

yes i have one daemon tools installed...i have this installed just when i installed my OS a few months ago...i didnt find any problems with it...i even mount images succesfully with it...ill still try deleting the sptd.sys file...

but im not using a usb keyboard...

i also tried overwriting my .sys files with the .sys files from the OS i am using right now...it somehow kinda improved the situation...the BSOD doesnt show anymore but i dont see the logon screen...just a black screen and my mouse cursor...

did you try control + alt + delete twice ??

Windows has a backup login screen that gets shown when you do that (the windows 2000 style login screen) , in case the welcome screen gets broken/

yup i tried ctrl+alt+del twice... i also tried ctr+shft+esc but nothing happened... and this time, i dont know what i did, the old OS had disappeared...when i boot my pc, it automatically start this OS i am using right now...using this OS, i checked if i still have the files on that disk and thank god its still there... what'd i do this time?

dude im very sorry if ive been bothering you this much but no one else seems to care bout my thread...its already 7:51am here in the philippines...i havent had sleep yet...im so desperate to solve my problem...i've promised myself that i'd only reformat my pc if i get an upgrade...since i havent yet, ill do my best to solve my prob...

It means you probably messed up the bootloader. Look it up - on xp you could reinstall the bootloader from the CD command prompt fairly easialy. Im going to bed now (its quarter past midnight)

dude,i happen to got my original OS back...but still not working...i downloaded vista boot pro and reinstalled my bootload or BCD but i still cant see my logon screen....just after the bootscreen, all i see is a black screen and a cursor...i cant perform any shortcuts like CTRL+ALT+DEL or anything... any suggestions?

sorry, thats really wierd, but at least it is booting now (sort of).

I think you may have to reinstall :(

might be worthwhile taking it to a professional computer repair shop though

The fact that the mouse pointer shows up means the boot config data is OK. You mentioned System Restore did not work from WinRE or Safe Mode. Try this. When you're at the black screen with the mouse pointer, open Task Manager, go to File > New Task and punch in "explorer" over there. That should bring up the main Windows shell in the normal mode. Once that happens, try running System Restore.

thank you for replying to this thread...but about your suggestion. i cant even log on to my account because i see the black screen right after seeing the bootscreen... any other suggestions?

Just a black screen or a black screen with a mouse pointer (arrow)? If it's the latter, you can open Task Manager by pressing CTRL-SHIFT-ESC.

Hi, i think you might have already sorted the inicial problem already of the black screen when starting vista, but i thought just to leave here the possible solution.

Just to make sure is the same problem we talking about i had a problem of when ever i start my vista it would open totally blank so i had to run the explorer.exe, if so this the possible solution.

1. Click the start menu and type
'regedit' and hit "Enter".

2. Naviaget to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

3. Click on "Winlogon" then locate the shell string in the right pane.

4. Double click it and replace the value with:

explorer.exe

5. Click Ok and exit regedit,

6. Reboot and you should be ok :)

You can run commands like regedit through task manager. It has access to a run prompt under the main menu.
