I am having an issue with a formula in excel and am not understanding what it is doing

=COUNTIF(J28:L31,"w")+COUNTIF(J28:L31,"l")

is supposed to give me a result of the number of cells with the value of either w or l in that range

But instead of displaying a number, it is displaying the formula.

can anyone tell me what it is that I'm doing wrong?
