Hello, my name is John McPherson. I work as a contractor for the DOL, and I am trying convert some code I maintain in an application to send output files to a printer. Right now, the code( a bash script) just slowly prints the output file on the screen, and the customer wants to have it sent to the printer instead. I work on a 64-bit Oracle( Sun) system with Solaris 11 as the Operating System. I have tried the command lpr -h -l $showfl in the bash script, but that just errors off without printing. I kept searching online …

After months of waiting, I am ready to invest in a gaming laptop with all the features included. Looking for something with great graphics and performance, possibly 16GB Ram. My budget is under $2000 and brand is not a priority.

I'm asking this question in the context of a satellite internet service with expensive download limits... If you just accept all the recommended updates for Windows 10 (creator's update, security etc) for a single Home Edition machine how many Gigabytes will that represent in a typical 12 month period? Eg: I'm thinking maybe 5 gig for one major update plus maybe an average of 500 meg/month other stuff?

Greetings, Okay, so having an odd issue with a network at work. This is a fairly small LAN with about 30-50 workstations / devices / printers / etc. So the issue in essence is that only one of the workstation on the network can access craigslist. All others time out. This is not a DNS issue as a ping to craigslist.org resolves correctly to 208.82.237.226 on all workstations. Also a tracert completes on all workstations with nothing remarkable. I have only seen this once before and the issue was never resolved. This is not an ISP issue as one of …

Remember when once upon a time all you had to do to start Windows in safe mode was go all Woody Woodpecker on the F8 key during boot? Well in Windows 10 it seems you have to do just a little more... 1. On the login screen click on the power icon (lower right) then hold the shift key while clicking "Restart" from the popup menu. 1. During the reboot you will get a "Choose an option" menu. Click on "Troubleshoot". 1. On the next menu click on "Advanced options". 1. On the next menu click on "Startup Settings". 1. …

Hi chaps, I have a Dell XPS17, dual booting with Windows and Ubuntu on it. I have to give it away and therefore reinstall windows. Usually, I'd format the whole HD and reinstall Windows, but I don't have the Windows CD – it wasn't dispatched with the laptop unfortunately – so I'd like to try to do everything with the Recovery partition. I checked and it appears to be there. Now, can I format the whole HD except the Recovery partition so that I reinstall windows and remove Ubuntu with some Windows' utility rather than manually formatting it?

My wife's laptop is a Dell Latitude E6520. A good enough machine except for one annoying quirk. The wireless card keeps disabling itself. We have it configured so that closing the lid puts it to sleep. When it wakes up, the wireless card is disabled. Before you ask, I already have it configured to not power off. I reinstalled the latest driver from Dell but no luck. So far I have managed by running a script in the background that repeatedly checks to see if the device is disbled, then automatically re-enables it, but I would rather fix the problem …

I am something of a self-confessed Anker hardware fan. I've been using their cables, power supplies and portable chargers for years now. However, I never really thought of Anker in the audio space, until now. Soundcore is an Anker brand with just audio products out there, as the name suggests. So, I needed some new earphones for my daily multi-mile walks and thought I'd give Soundcore a go. Especially when I saw these 'Liberty Lite' wireless earbuds were so much cheaper than the big brand versions from the likes of Apple, Bose and Samsung. Not that I have an iPhone, …

It wasn't bad enough that Skype nagged me with "your current version will soon stop working" every time I brought up the GUI. When I ignored the upgrade requests is started popping up notices even when I wasn't using Skype. So I finally bit the bullet and did the upgrade to Skype version 8.25.0.5. As far as I can tell, the changes are only cosmetic. Changing the font size is non-standard. In Chrome, Firefox, my email, etc, you can increase/decrease the font size with CTRL+/CTRL- or by CTRL-SCROLL. But in Skype you have to CTRLSHIFT+. There is still no way …

Hi, My Acer Aspire One mini laptop gives me a black screen after powering on. Power light on, battery light on, NO hard drive light on and never shows anything but black. I have tried a lot of the strategies I've read here (remove battery, replace, unplug, etc., pressing various function buttons, holding power button down), still nothing. This happened once about 2 weeks ago and then it came back on after being off for a couple hours but that has not worked this time. I do not know how to take out/replace ram (is that for Random Access Memory? …

Hey lately i have currently been looking for a new cpu cooler considering that i still have the default stock cooler that came with the cpu and/or case... Which isn't really doing its job too well not cooling and extremely loud (doesn't help that the computer is in the hottest room thats like a oven through out the day). I would like to aim for something between $30-60$ excluding postage costs (preferably something cheaper thats half decent).

I need to take a video posted on youtube that was once a powerpoint and convert back to a powerpoint and print. I can't seem to find a converter for mp4 to ppt, i.e., that would work once I have the video download. Obviously there has to be a free software out there somewhere that can do this. Anyone know of one?

I run Sierra unsupported on a late 2009 Mac Mini and have had no problems with it until now after trying to uninstall and re-install (unsuccessfully) Skype. The Finder is not working properly. I can't open the Finder window from the Dock nor will Finder - Go work on the menu bar. But Finder - File - New Finder Window does work and I can access Apps from there successully and also from the Dock. Repeated rebooting doesn't work except occasionally for a short time and I've even re-installed Sierra without changing anything. I assume the re-install happened but didn't …

My computer keeps zoning out. Losing Wifi connection and when I "fix" the wifi adapter soon after it notifies me that the "wifi does not have a valid IP configuration" and then, it re-connects itself and it's fine for a while..then zones out again. I would appreciate it if someone could walk me through the steps on how to fix this; I'm sure it isn't complicated to some but it's latin to me and driving me wired right now.
