I was taking a class this week for A+ OS certification. We got to a section on setting up an e-mail account with outlook. A few people in the class said they never did that, so the instructor has us do a quick walkthrough on it. We used actual pop3 and imap servers used by the local phone company. Then just had us a use our first name for the username and a password of password. The instructor figured everyone would get an invalid username/password when trying to connect to the mail server. Wrong. Oddly enough, one account actually worked …

I am pretty proficient in C++ and Java. I know that most progrmas could be written in either language. My question for those of you who have been out there for a while, do companies tend to use one programming language for certain types of programs? For example, is C++ typically used for larger applications and Java used more for web based programs? I tend to like working with Java more, but am not so interested in web development(seems a lot of Java jobs deal with using JSP and servlets). Do I need to choose the type of programming I …

I'm looking to setup a wireless connection to connect 2 LAN's in 2 seperate buildings to make a single LAN(a church office and a school office). What I need to accomplish is: 1. be able to share files between the 2 offices 2. the church office has a DSL connection, the school office will need the wireless connection to connect to the church office LAN and be able to use the DSL connection there. The two buildings are about 150-200 feet apart, there are some trees in between. If that will cause too much interferance, it could be setup to …

I've looked around the forums and did not find a lot of book reviews, so I figure I'll ask. Generally speaking, what are some good programming books? Any specific authors or series that you would recommend? Now to be more detailed, I know C++ and Java, and am familiar with VB 6.0. I was going to get into .NET I have not worked with it yet and know very little about it. What would be a good book to start with for .NET?

Has anyone else ever seen this happen? My machine has 2 hard drives with several partitions(c,e,f,g,h,i, and d for the cd rom). I booted from the winxp cd, and when it got to the point where it asked which partition I wanted to install Windows on, I noticed the drive letters on some partitions had changed. The partitions were still intact, so I just went ahead and deleted and recreated my C partition and continued with installation. All went through fine. Once I got back into Windows, I went into disk management to format the e partition. To my surprise, …

This is something I am interested in opinions on. First, a little background. At work, the CIO made a discussion blog on the company intranet. He posts a blog, then anyone can reply to it with their thoughts. The CIO or some other high up person will make some replies as well. This past week the CIO made a blog about how projects are handled. One person replied by criticizing upper management for setting goals but not having a plan to achieve them. The CIO replied along the lines of: it is my job to set the goals and to …

I have an issue with a laptop with cybergatekeeper installed on it. CGK is used to enforce security policy when user connects through vpn. It runs an audit to make sure the laptop is complying with the policy, if it is, vpn connection is allowed. If it fails, vpn connection is denied. The issue I am having is cybergatekeeper passes the audit and allows the vpn connection. Then every minute or so it keeps running another audit. It seems the program is in a continuous auditing state. What happening is causing the user network speed over vpn to decrease dramatically. …

This school office switched from Macs to PC's recently. There were some documents that needed to be transfered to the PC. They saved them with a .txt and then copied them to the PC. For the most part that worked except for one file. It is an evaluation form(the others were straight text, nothing fancy). Is there another way to get this appleworks file to be read by MS Word on a PC? Mac OS is 9.1

This situation might seem a little odd. Alot of questions deal with trying to get rid of that log on box when accessing a network share, where me, I need it to come back. I got a 15 user workgroup network at a church/school office. All computers are Win 2000/XP Pro. All files that are shared are stored on one XP PRo computer. The guy before me who set things up, had everyone authenticate to the file server by using the guest account. That was fine at the time, but now there are some folders being put on the server …

I'm trying to get PHP up and running on my computer. I'm running win xp and trying to install php 4.3.7 and using apache 2 webserver. When I try to load a php file on by web browser I get a blank screen. According to php.net the issues is this: " Do a 'view source' in the web browser and you will probably find that you can see the source code of your PHP script. This means that the web server did not send the script to PHP for interpretation. Something is wrong with the server configuration - double check …

For those of you who have had the privledge of dealing with these people, how would you describe their knowledge/ability to do the job? I know by the term, they are not really qualified for the job, but get it anyway because they have the cert. The reason I ask is because I am currently working on an MCSA and eventaully MCSE. I've heard about these type of people and have made it a goal not to turn out like them. I put the focus on learning the stuff I am studying. I've heard they don't even know some of …

I have a Brother HL-1440 laser printer in an office. The toner cartridge was just recently changed, and now the print is lighter with the new toner cartridge than with the old one. Initially the drum light was yellow, I fixed that by reseting the page counter after changing the new catridge, that light is now green. I checked the printer properties to see that no toner saving settings were turned on. This leads me to one of 2 conclusions, the new toner cartrige is bad, or the drum needs to be replaced. With all things, money is the bottom …

HI, looking for some advice from the mac users here. I recently got a side job supporting computers in a church office. There is also a k-8 school filled with macs that I had nothing to do with until last week. The wants to upgrade it's computers(the macs thye have are 5 years old). They are also considering going to PC's, so they have asked me to price the cost of switching entirely over to PC's. But the teacher currently in charge of maintaining the macs is bent on staying with macs. The software they want to use is out …

I came across this article recently: Disk Backups I've never had to extensive backing up myself. I've never used magnetic tape for storage. The stuff I've had to backup has always been small enough to fit on a Cd/DVD. For those of you who have used different mediums, what do you think? Are hard drives becoming the best way to backup servers?

I need a little help connecting to a database in Java. The example in the book I have uses the following:
static final String JDBC_DRIVER = "com.ibm.db2j.jdbc.DB2jDriver"; static final String DATABASE_URL = "jdbc:db2j:books";
It goes on to use it:
System.setProperty("db2j.system.home", "C:/mysql"); Class.forName(JDBC_DRIVER); connect = DriverManager.getConnection(DATABASE_URL);
First off the book uses a Cloudscape DB, I'm using mysql. My question is, where does the information for the JDBC_DRIVER and DATABASE_URL come from? Are the drivers included in the Java software or do I need to download it? Thanks Ken

So now I am looking for an entry level programming job but it does not seem like they exsist. My question is am I going about this the wrong way? Do I need to start in some lower position(help desk or tech support etc) in a company and move up?
