Lab 9: Sets in the Java Collection Framework

For this week's lab, you will use two of the classes in the Java Collection Framework: HashSet and TreeSet. You will use these classes to implement a spell checker.

This lab is due at the time of the next lab, next Tuesday, March 31. Please copy your work into the homework directory by that time.

Your work from labs 6, 7, and 8 is due this week. I will not look for this work until this weekend. Make sure that it is done before Saturday morning. You should have a working genetic programming project, including the work that you did for both Lab 6 and Lab 7. I will look for this work in the CVS repository that you created for Lab 8. You should also have a written report on your work with the debugger in Lab 8, which you can turn in in class (or let me know exactly where I can find it).

Set Methods

For this lab, you will need to use some of the methods that are defined in the Set interface. Recall that if set is a Set, then the following methods are defined:

set.size() -- Returns the number of items in the set.
set.add(item) -- Adds the item to the set, if it is not already there.
set.contains(item) -- Check whether the set contains the item.
set.isEmpty() -- Check ...
