I am writing a VB.Net (VS 2015) application to control equipment in real time which is connected via USB ports. The equipment requires that text string, terminated by a chr(13) be sent. Most commands will get a response back. For example one command (set VALVE1 ON) will open a valve one on the equipment. When plugging the equipment in it appears as COM7 on my laptop, though I can change this via device manager, and have done so to ensure I don't get the problem just on COM7. the euipment then sends back a string to confirm valve has opened. …

As some of you know I am moving to VB.net from VB5. I see that to read and write to text files there are two options 1) Use System.IO.File e.g Filewritealltext ( options...) or 2) Use Streamwriter e.g Dim ts as StreamWriter( options...) Are there any differences, apart from syntax, that I should be aware of, e.g speed, memory use, etc. Both appear to do same thing if reading and ariting to text files.

Hello, I have for a number of years supported a VB5 application which controls customers equipment. We are now going to do some major changes to software because hardware is changing. It now seems the ideal opportunity to upgrade to a newer/latest version of visual basic, which if we go the Microsoft route is part of Visual Studio. First thoughts of mine suggest there are two ways of getting to latest version 1) rewrite in new version, using code from old version and converting appropiately 2) convert in steps via the various versions of VB, such that I pick the …

If you write a post without having first logged on, then the option to loggon with DaniWeb credentials is not there. Three other loggon options are there which I don't have, but not Daniweb loggon. If you then go to top of screen to loggon you loose what you have written, unless you you copy it first.

I need to interface to a USB device from VB.net, where I both read and write to the device. Are there any programing differences between the different USB interfaces, i.e 1,2 and 3 that I should be aware ? Does it matter if say a USB 3 device is plugged into a USB2 port ? Thanks for your help

Hello, I support a large VB5 application which is installed and running on a number of windows PC's around the world on versions up to win 7. I have installed it on windows 8 and whilst the program starts, it fails with error 70 in a number of places. On checking the code I find it is the calling of sndkeys that is failing. This is used to position the user in the correct place on the form that is open. If I leave out the call the program appears to work. We are currently carrying out further testing to …

[COLOR="blue"] Hi, I have been given a Dell Inspiron Mini 10 to fix by a friend, but it is stumping me currently. Friend put new screen because previous one was cracked. He couldn't get it to work, though claims to get it to display like old DOS machines, but I have not seen this. I have removed screen and keyboard and checked all connections which seem to be ok. Hinges are cracked but cabling looks Ok. A few days ago, having removed screen and put it back in again I powered up laptop without keyboard connected and screen worked fine. …

[COLOR="blue"]Good morning All I have a customer who has an old DOS application which he wishes to continue running on his new laptop with Windows 7. The software installs correctly and starts to run. Soon after starting it appears to issue a command to switch to full screen mode, at which point it falls over. It needs 640 x 480 resolution to run, which I have set in the properties for the icon. I have installed Virtual PC and get same results. I have also tried piping results to a file and tried an external monitor, all without sucess. I …

Hi Everyone, Has anyone accessed USB ports from VB5. I support a major realtime program which controls equipment. Currently the equipment is connected to PC via serial ports. My customer is developing new hardware and has decided to connect it via USB port. So two questions 1) has anyone controlled non PC hardware connected by USB port from VB5 program ? Data will flow in both directions, in case this makes a difference. 2) should I move system to VB6 ? Thanks for any help Denis

I have a customer who is running Outlook 2003 connected to an Exchange server. He has a large number of files, mostly Word documents in the Public folders. I have written VB code in Outlook to parse though all his folders and produce a list of the files. However I can not find a command to copy the files back to his PC. There is a command AddDocItem which will copy files form PC to the public folder. So I am looking for opposite command. Anyone point me in right direction please ? Thanks Denis

Hi, I have a real time application which I write and and support in VB5 running under Windows 98 to XP. If the user has set the options under Power Scheme to turn off the disk or processor it can cause problems to the system. Does anyone know how to programatically find the settings ? I have found a way of finding the scheme, but users can change setting in the scheme, hence I need to find the settings. Thanks Denis
