Trying to restrict some share access on a simple network I made a syntax error or two, and googled net share and hidden share. This sort of thing came up many times: "to create a hidden share enter... net share concfg*C:\ /GRANT:username, FULL " ...and was touted as a hack! and totally mischievous stuff. Well, I thought you created "hidden shares" by using sharename$.... and so the cmd would be... net share hideyhole$=D:\secretstuff /GRANT:username, FULL -which, of course, works. And looks silly, and isn't very hidden. The first cmd just throws, obviously, syntax error. So what is this concfg* thing? …

Lately the cursor positioning has reverted to its earlier bad behaviour where it would float a position ahead of the insertion point. Now it seems to do it only when you go back over your work to correct, insert etc. Pestilential. I note, too, that multiple spaces in pasted items again cause invocation of the Code Snippet Detection monster. Or something is. And I am a rare beast... I don't tweet, or stuff about on facebook. That popup is an annoyance, not because I must click to remove it, but because I think I loathe heartily what it represents, and …

Windows 8 is available for download as a release preview upgrade for people wishing to familiarise themselves, and test. Point: why should I get W8? I am using XP and yes, I know support falls over in two years, but I am very happy with what it does... it fills my requirements absolutely. W7? Haven't bothered with it for that very reason. Opinions?

Some tme ago the British chocolate manufacturer was bought by Kraft. Super sweet meets super bland. Anyway, Kraft being American and having too many corporate lawyers tried to copyright the Cadbury colour purple. They may have succeeded, I don't know, it wasn't the sort of news item you hung in for followup. Perhaps we will find out if Daniweb gets sued for infringement. What am I saying here? Oh, yeah. Purple.

I don't see code here, why is it being detected as such? Here is the post, all in a code box: There are a few things to tidy up, but first, some advice: there are a lot of items under MSCONFIG Startup and Services which have been disallowed (prevented from starting) - MSCONFIG is fine to use for debugging/troubleshooting, but thereafter entries should not be left unchecked. The offending items/programs should be uninstalled or otherwise removed. If items are unchecked in MSCONFIG and an uninstallation is attempted then it will not complete -manual removal from registry is then required. For …

Pray tell, what is being detected as code in this reply. It is all here in a code box because I don't know what is causing the problem. There are a few things to tidy up, but first, some advice: there are a lot of items under MSCONFIG Startup and Services which have been disallowed (prevented from starting) - MSCONFIG is fine to use for debugging/troubleshooting, but thereafter entries should not be left unchecked. More fun with Markdown. To denote all files, folders in H: drive one seems to have to type two backslashes, so: Typing H:\\* gives H:* in the post. and H:\\ \\* gives H:\\* And you wouldn't believe the fun I had typing that. What I had to type is totally different to what is posted, but what is posted is what I want you to see. Got it? Have a play... Hint. To get that H:\\ \\* I had to type H: \\ \\ and \\ \\* sep by a space. And to get that hint to post? Oh, my …

I see this sort of thing regularly. In the forum page a topic will be bumped up by a poster [name appearing to right]... you go to the post or topic and the bumper's post is just not there. An example, same in FF n Opera: http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/windows-nt-2000-xp/threads/28182/password-recovery-on-windows-xp-home-sp2#post1835562

I'd like to respond to a poster, but i get a red warning about a code snippet being not correctly formatted. There is no code in my post, just some log references and a URL. This site... it's getting beyond me... i do not follow the reason for the parroting of my work as I type.... I haven't a clue about whitespace-sensitive text....what is whitespace? Paste does not appear as an option, only Ctrl-V... I click on the parrot text, it disappears, I click in the typed section, the parrot reappears.. what is going on? I only have so much …

The last couple of days this site has been throwing "Sorry. The administrator has banned your IP address. To contact the administrator click here" whenever I try to enter the Microsoft Forums, also directly enter http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/windows-nt-2000-xp/10 I can circumvent it by logging into another forum and then navigating to the above latter page. It happens with Opera, FF, and Tor-FF, so is not really an IP addy issue? With Tor-FF I could be comng from NY or Amsterdam or most anywhere, really... atm I am using an ISP in Goteborg, Sweden not Australia. Before I log in I can navigate …

Is there a reason, perhaps related to the Opera browser, which keeps me logged in even after I perform the Log Out/All cookies cleared routine?

I cannot see where else to post this so here it goes.... =The font size range is a bit too large. I find it very disagreeable. for my taste, the big is far too big. Sorry. =I cannot link from Microsoft Windows to Win NT/2000/XP. I can only get there by clicking on a thread from that forum after I log in. [Opera, FF..].

Crunchie, how do I stop those sodding stupid smileys from disrupting the text..... that last reg repair line formats incorrectly if you copy it into notepad. Man, but those things really wee me off. "3389:TCP"= 3389:TCP:LocalSubNet:Disabled:@xpsp2res.dll,-22009 will copy incorrectly.

Now it is my turn to beg, plead ignorance..:) this one has me beaten, and i am tired of googling for a solution. I recently added a second SATA hd [my boot disk is also SATA, there are no IDE drives on my sys apart from my DVD combo on IDE secondary]. Anyway, my sys knows SATA.... so I plugged in the drive to SATA 02, connected power and turned on, went directly to disk management console and initialised the new drive and next dropped a couple of primary partitions onto it. They are listed as healthy, hardware manager, device …

I'm on a posting roll.... :) Why does Firefox [the clean mozilla versio] make my pc emit a highpitched buzz when it is loading? The noise is from the mobo, not the sys speaker [I think- anyway it does not emit from my soundsys... could it be the sys speaker?]... FF alone does it, no other app; when loading of data is over it shuts up. What gives? Add more silicone to something to dampen it? But to what? Does anyone else have this problem? And b4 ppl get funny, my processor is clamped and under a huge dedicated fan, …

I use Outlook Express as my mail client, and a POP3 interpreter YPOPS to give OE access to my Yahoo accounts. It works like a dream. But it's two clicks too many to open YPOPS and OE both, so i changed the OE shortcut to point to a .cmd file [...batch file if u like...] dropped into the OE folder which opens YPOPS and then OE. Ohyazzz...! Now, is there any way i can stop the cmd window from opening for a split second as it does this simple thing? There must be a cmd somewhere..... any ideas? [..and i …

to enhance the data safety and speed etc of my computer i have built about 8 partitons/logical drives on my 160GB hdd. now, the questions. you cannot move the My Documents folder from the boot partition { if you think u have, then u have only created a shortcut}. you can move, or delete, the folders it contains, and build another My Docs folder elsewhere, but it is not the default that xp will use. next, inside the boot drive {prob C: }, u can move Documents and Settings as a whole. is it much disadvantageous in terms of speed …
