Inbetween contracts over the last year or so I have been beavering away building a CMS with a difference. https://www.graphia.co.uk/ It's aimed at companies that have huge libraries of documents that every employee needs (operating procedures, handbooks, guides, etc) locked away in inflexible propriatory formats (aka Sharepoint/Confluence). * documents are stored in plain text (Markdown) files * the 'database' is a Git repository (but end-users needn't know!) * authors can work online using the web editor (but power users can clone the repo and work in whichever editor they like) * the documentation is 'published' to a static site, the …

This isn't a typical hardware post, but I couldn't find anywhere better for it. Last October, after my previous TV packed in, I bought a shiny new Samsung Smart TV. My shortlist of requirements was: * Excellent picture quality, preferably 4k * No advertising built into the UI * Within my price range (I ended up spending £1,400 on it) The reason for my second requirement is that many years ago I bought a Hard Disk Recorder from Panasonic that had the following style of EPG. Note the advert taking up roughly 1/4 of the width of the screen. ![.](/attachments/large/0/019bd95010f4520af8a7a015a76eb4fc.jpg) …

Has anyone tried [Mastodon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastodon_(software)) yet? For those who don't know it's a federated, distributed and (currently) technology-orientated social network (well, rather a group of interoperable social networks) that's fully open source and ad-free. I've been impressed so far but as with every new network, whether it flies or not will depend on how many people join, contribute and keep the ball rolling.

It would appear that too many notifications are added to the feed for certain events, making it difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff. Take the example of this annoying spammer creating a post: ![Screen_Shot_2017-01-26_at_15_16_46.png](/attachments/large/0/70f9ca54d7b9fe3b576a82ab688e0d74.png "align-center") Aside from the fact he's a waste of oxygen, that's more than one whole screen of notifications for a post creation and quick edit (less than a minute after posting). Also, I don't see any replies, so perhaps the "replied to a post" notification is superflouous. Perhaps these could be condensed; do we need to know who started watching each post - it …

I've made a couple of lengthy posts over the last couple of days and have noticed a few bugs with the editor. Nothing show-stopping but some make the editing process more difficult or some content vanish! (I added the 'nerd' Emoji in one of my posts, it saved without errors but all subquent content in the post was missing!). Rather than me add them here, is there a tracker somewhere so they can be categorised, verified and dealt with? If there is, I'm happy to post detailed steps, screenshots, even animated gifs if that gives whoever will be looking at …

I'm sure most people here are aware of software patents; for those that aren't there is a good article on wikipedia about the pros and cons here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_patent_debate I am a firm beleiver that software patents stifle innovation and always seem to favour those with large wallets and an army of lawyers. I'm not going to rant here and now I just wanted to bring your attention to a petition on the Prime Minister's web site. If you think that software patents are as an absurd an idea as I do please sign it:(UK residents only). Just wondering if any rails experts could give me a hand with this problem. I have rails/fcgi/lighttpd set up, when I use script/server it loads up fine. However if I try to run lighttpd as a service /etc/init.d/lighttpd start using the config file in /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf it doesn't quite work. It displays the welcome to rails message but in the "About your application's environment" box it has 404 error, I also get a 404 error when trying to view any dynamic pages. Here is my lighttpd.conf file :
# lighttpd configuration file server.modules = ( "mod_rewrite", "mod_accesslog", "mod_redirect", "mod_fastcgi", "mod_compress", …

I've been between contracts for the last 3 months or so, doing bits and pieces of work here and there but mainly enjoying my time off (snoozing, watching tv and t'internet). Considering the amount of people working in the IT industry, the popularity of IT/computing in general, the number of kids learning IT at school and university; why do we not have a single serious IT program? Its not like there is a shortage of news stories, scandal, events and general 'stuff' going on. I'd just want something in the vain of Working Lunch but aimed at the IT industry. …
